Brake Assist Premature Activition

Post by stuartbarriskell » Thu Aug 25, 2022 8:48 am

This is the second time this week that this kicked in.

I was in the left hand lane heading North, a car was in the right lane and turning right, for no good reason my brakes momentarily locked up and the dash lit up between the clocks.

I've just Street viewed the junction and fortunately it represents the position of my car and the other car pretty well albeit the distances between vehicles were closer but not side by side closer if that makes sense, when you don't expect it it's pretty sobering, it was as if I had stabbed at the brake pedal for a second.

Quickly assessing the situation, there was nothing behind me and I was nowhere near the car turning right that would justify this happening AFAIK the car has never been in a smash/bump and had a full health check including a diagnostic plug in at A For Audi on Friday which I seen with my own eyes.

Conversely I popped in to A For Audi and spoke to the tech Mick, he had a quick look at the sensor, no visible damage and no movement in the housing so I'm a bit confused with this.

Googled and seen various reports of this prematurely activating with some horror stories on Motorways and the like.. other than switch it off...what to do, has this happened to anyone else ?

Cheers..Image

I don't think there is any fault on you vehicle, but the laser being overly sensitive by design, and picking up the vehicle ahead of you despite bejng in a different lane, believing an immediate collision is imminent.
Personally, I don't like the feature. I appreciate that in a worse case scenario, it may help reduce a serious impact, but under normal driving conditions it can be over sensitive.
Albeit in my wifes Honda, locally, there is a particular piece of 30 mph road with a bend to the right and a stone wall on the nearside, and invariably, on the immediate approach, the laser picks up the wall, with the audible warning and red BRAKE warning flashing up on the dash.
I regularly use motorways, and find that the feature activates unnecessarily, especially when other drivers change lanes 'squeezing into a gap' which causes a sudden reduction of speed of the car I'm driving, which, without this feature may be controlled by slight deceleration, but the system thinks a collision is imminent, and goes the whole hog which I find irritating.
I also find it annoying when a car has passed you on a motorway, and you then pull out into that lane to pass a slower vehicle in front and the system activates because the laser has picked up either of the two vehicles, but you as the 'driver' have the situation perfectly in control and in reality, nowhere near enough to either vehicle that would give cause for concern.
I'm glad it is a feature I don't actually have on my RS4, because generally, I find it a hinderance rather than of any assistance. I know on some vehicles, the sensitivity can be recduced, or the distance between any vehicle ahead can be increased before it activates.
The feature needs to be greatly improved in my opinion before I would consider having it as an option on any future vehicle.
I think it is something that you will have to live with I'm afraid, as the feature isn't perfect for every driving situation.

I never thought there was anything wrong per se, like you I don't think it's refined enough. I can disable it, which completely defeats the purpose of having it in the first place. ... I'll monitor it and see how it goes, if it happens again I'll make a decision on it..
