Transmission software upgrade

Hi all,

I am actively searching for a RS4 B8 and have come across a 140k km one. The owner told me that he experienced some issue with smoothness of gear shifiting and that the dealer upgraded the firmware. Problem solved. My question: is this a long term fix or will there actually be a costly hardware issue on the horizon? Is there a good way to check the transmission?
