Some exhaust advice
Some exhaust advice
Hey everyone. I'll soon be in search for a bit more spirit from my OEM sports exhaust.
I've done a lot of reading on the forums and watched a whole load of videos and I think my preferred route is to gut the pre-cats and replace the centre silencer with an x pipe to maintain the stock scavenging but bring out some more of the soundtrack.
A few questions:
1) has anyone done this? Loads of B7 guys have but I'm struggling on the B8
2) If no to question 1 does it sound like a sensible idea?
3) who would people recommended for this work (I'm close enough to MRC, AMD, RS fab, JCweld fab) and what would you pay?
4) i know i'll get a CEL as the downstream lambda is behind the pre-cat. Some people move them downstrean of the main cat, some people code them out? What's best?
Appreciate the advice, thanks

Re: Some exhaust advice
The exhaust on the B8 is quite different to that of the B7.
The cats are located right up by the exhaust manifold and integral; so there's no pre-cats to gut. There are some resonators in the downpipes but removing those will change the noise rather than effect gas flow. I think Kline is the only company that I've heard of that do a decat system for the B8 – this isn’t cheap as the engine has to come out, so that you can then get to the exhaust manifold/cats.

Re: Some exhaust advice
Thanks Sam. I was under the impression we had 400 cell main cats and 200 cell pre-cats for warm up duties (opposite of the S4). MRC offer a pre-cat gutting but maybe that is an error from the B7 options?

No problem, I believe that's an error for the B8 and just carried over from the B7 modifications list.DeanoC wrote:Thanks Sam. Have a read through this build thread and you'll soon see the exhaust manifold/cats which is unlike those fitted to the B7.

Re: Some exhaust advice
Ah see what you mean:

Yea i'm not getting that involved!
X pipe it is then to start. Question is do i simply replace the centre resonator / x pipe or try and get it further upstream.....

Re: Some exhaust advice
We've recently completed a X pipe install. This makes the sound raspier especially in dynamic mode
These do tend to sound better from outside the car as Audi are so well insulated you don't get the full effect from the cabin.

Thanks Ant. Raspier is good. Maybe I'm a chav but i like the noise it makes when cold and the air injection is on. Shame you guys are so far!

Re: Some exhaust advice
If we're too far for you to visit for fitting, we can still help out with the supply of the exhaust

Re: Some exhaust advice
That is exactly what I'm after. Supersprint right? What do they go for?
Re: Some exhaust advice
I have the supersprint x-pipe on my car. It i an improvement over the standard sports exhaust but i do get a bit of drone between 1600-2000rpm but nothing major. All things considered for the money it is well worth it.
Re: Some exhaust advice
Thanks @Jhcolling. I'm after a bit more rasp and volume with the valves open.Jhcolling wrote:I have the supersprint x-pipe on my car. I can deal with low rpm drone. I have forced the valves open at the moment and it drones a bit now in D mode where it holds 7th but you got to hear something driving a 4 litre v8 right...
Re: Some exhaust advice
So does the standard exhaust have to be butchered or is it an unscrew relevant section bolt on x pipe? And what's the cost including fitting?
Re: Some exhaust advice
The centre section unbolts from the downpipe end and then needs to be cut from the rear mufflers and the new one clamped on.ARSEY4 wrote:So does the standard exhaust have to be butchered or is it an unscrew relevant section bolt on x pipe? And what's the cost including fitting?
Off the shelf or custom from someone good is looking like ~£800
