He may have been checking to see if there was a big difference in depth across the axles?

UPDATE 1

1) I've now also broken the '15 A4 TDi loan car, actually it was probably broken when I got it but a 500+ mile motorway trip yesterday brought to light that a rear wheel bearing is on its way out. Audi are trying to locate a replacement car for today.

2) My local dealer has jiggled around work and has managed to carry out an initial assessment on my car and have confirmed the noise is there and not normal. Audi UK/AG asked for the gearbox oil to be dropped and analysed for rogue material, such as metal swarf etc. Apparently the sample came back clean. So now, the thinking is that the problem could be the crown wheel centre differential. This is a gearbox out job to inspect the part. The main workshop slot for my car is tomorrow, so hopefully I should get the next update around the end of play tomorrow.

If anyone wants to know where/what the crown wheel centre differential does, then I've found a nicely explained video below on the RS5, which has the same setup:

Best of luck with it Sam, I hope the RS is on the mend soon.

What car will you be breaking next?

Hope its fixed soon for you Sam, nothing like buying a car and then having to give it back.
Sounds like the dealer is being helpful getting it seen asap and hopefully you'll get some goodwill.

Thanks guys. I still have 12 months of original Audi warranty remaining but will likely extend that upon expiry, just to be safe.

UPDATE 2

The master tech at my local dealership has yesterday, removed the gearbox and centre crown wheel differential from my car to allow for a full inspection. Apparently both will require replacing, which tied into my initial thoughts of a component within the gearbox failing.

So, new ones have been ordered and hopefully sent over from Germany arriving tomorrow or Thursday. The dealer is not committing to getting it all fitted back together by weekend and to be honest, I'm not pushing them to either. As I just want a decent job done and the problem resolved.

Nah, they wouldn't, Audi claims that their QC and stress tests for all their cars with drive train modes are done for in that car models most extreme driver set up mode (ie. Sport, dynamic etc). So by their own legal submission, if your car has a sport mode or whatever, you should be able to drive it in that mode for the entirety of you ownership without that in itself being grounds for component failure.

I bet that doesn't cover repeated launches.

breaking cars is not, i repeat NOT funny :assflash:

although breaking their courtesy car maybe is a little bit!

Glad to see they are making good progress with it, any reports of it as a common fault or just an uncommon issue?

Think I've broken it?

C'mon, breaking the courtesy car is pretty funny!!

Good news they've got to the bottom of it Sam, but did they offer any explanation as to how the failure could have occurred on such a low mileage car?

As Toby mentions - would be interested to know if this is a problem other B8 owners have suffered from too?

Couldn't agree more,
let them have the RS4 for as long as they need, as long as you get a good job done and your car back like new. Glad its getting sorted.

Sam, Is there any chance they can throw any light on the HHA while their at it? Could they sort it for you FOC?

Probably doesn't explicitly NOT cover it, but I'm sure they'd have some legal semantic jargon to worm their way out!

UPDATE 3

Ok got the call earlier this afternoon saying they've managed to get it all back together and was ready for me to collect. Excellent...I thought.

All collected and just done 40 miles in it. I'm now well and truly pi$$ed off to say the least :!:
  • Steering out of alignment (right hand down).
    Car wonders left.
Experienced a massive jolt/clunk with it going into first gear.
An audible chatter/whine noise at low speed, crawling around in heavy traffic with no throttle.
Gear lever mechanism feels odd changing between D/S - not very positive in its action, almost sticky.
Feint transmission whirring at tick over.
Given time and mileage, I could probably find more.

Some of the above i.e. the alignment can be blamed upon the dealership. However, the rest is falling at Audi's door because they've sent out a re-conditioned gearbox to be fitted to the car. Yes it's quieter but it feels far worse than the broken one I had in there before. There is a noticeable amount of general wear and slack in it, making the car feel like its aged by 10 years and done twenty times the mileage of my own car. They've honestly ruined it.

Arrrrrgggghhhhhh

Going to sit on it overnight and try calm down a bit. I'll call Audi Customer Services in the morning to make an official complaint, next I shall be taking the car back to the dealership, so that I can make them aware of the situation and see what they have to say about it.
