New windscreen

Post by Gusto » Sun Jan 24, 2016 8:18 pm

Has anyone had to have a new screen fitted?

Got a stone chip which quickly split to the edge of the screen within a minute or two. I've never replaced a screen before on 20 years of driving! I did a search on here and saw some people saying auto glass do not use the same screens but that was back in 2010 - I wonder if they have changed at all....

Any stories welcome!

I think I used auto glass or whatever the big company is. They will try and give you an equivalent screen. When I asked for an OEM Audi screen they had to contact my insurance company to get authority before proceeding. Same cost to me i.e. the £90 excess or whatever it was.

Yes, sure, but its not a few days work. But then again you did get something fun to drive.

Ideally recalibration is a dealer job to get it spot on, depends what you have. I you just have auto lights and wipers then its not required really and Autoglass etc. can do a remote location fit. If you have the extra driver assist features like adaptive cruise etc then I'd suggest having the dealer recalibrate the systems.

Remember to leave the car between 3 & 4 hours before opening and closing the doors and driving as the glue needs to cure and I have seen windscreens pop out after a door slam after fitting. Very easy to have a screen leak if not left to cure, screens in modern cars become part of the structural integrity of the vehicle and help in roll over situations.

Sorry, probably telling you what you already know.

It will not need recalibration, but if it makes you feel better get it done.

I just had one fitted about a week ago. I insisted on it being done through my local Audi garage. My insurance company would not deal direct with them so i had to pay the bill and claim the money back from them less the £75 excess. I wanted to go through the main dealer in case there were any issues such as leaking etc later on. They did say that by going through them i get a genuine OEM screen that will not suffer from some of the issues they see with non genuine screens, such as mirrors falling off. Including the screen , labour and various fitting parts required, i think it cost me in the region of £660. Just make sure that they get the screen fitted in the morning and then don't close the doors with the windows up or move it for a good few hours.

I had new OEM screen fitted last summer at my request to Insurance company. Auto Glass quote a two week lead time to get one of theirs (which I didn't want). Had a bit of a wrangle with Insurer and had to liaise with local Audi dealer but eventually got it fitted and paid cost of circa £900 within a couple of days or so. The Lane Assist re-callibration was being quoted at £400 which neither insurer or myself would pay. Instructed dealer to fit screen and sensors and lane assist camera and works spot on without re-callibration.

Good news on recalibration front, noted for future.

My insurer paid the whole bill so wasn't too fussed.
