Dirty water retained in Disc's

Post by Pando99 » Thu Apr 23, 2015 8:52 pm

Last couple of times i have washed the car and then taken it out there is then a massive mess of dirty water sprayed all over the inside of the alloys. So washed the car then took it for a quick round the block to displace any water, again mega mess.
Quick wipe off and ok, but gets me wondering is something blocked that water is being retained somewhere within the disc/ disc hub
I have never seen this happen with normal vented discs

Any advice or is this normal with floating discs (correct term ???)

Use an airline or if you haven't got one maybe a leaf blower?? Just make sure its clean other wise you may end up shot blasting your alloys :jump:

Have also noticed this too although I have Ceramics,
seems to come from the centre of the discs and leaves a line of dirt around the middle of the alloy.
Not worried about it, just annoying after cleaning the wheels.

exactly, very disappointing after getting the wheels clean. Makes me wonder if a drain hole is blocked, this will lead to corrosion issues

Will try googling it to see what is out there

They don't have drain holes as such, only internal venting, which can get blocked up with crap pretty easy
On a steel disc, the holes are pretty small, but water in there won't cause any corrosion issues as the steel used is super hard, so you'd need to leave salty water in there for probably years for it to do more that barely corrode the surface
Ceramics have much larger internal vents, so shouldn't retain much water, although you'll always get a bit in the horizontal vanes and some of the funnier shape ones. You could probably get the water out by driving 6 foot slowly down your drive after washing

I appreciate this is an out of date R8 disc, but the technology's the same

If the drilled holes are plugged with brake dust then the upward pointing vents will hold water until driven and the you get the mess you've described. The advice above should work.

All

Washed the car when i was home this time and gave the discs a long blast, with the water running clear, then straight away took round the block, got back and the wheels were black !!! to say the least, washed again and then put in the garage overnight.
Drove it next day all ok.

So have called Audi and they have no idea but will take it in and wash it and then drive it to see the mess that occurs

I would like to know if any/ much other people have this issue ?

Audi have had my car for almost a week and have not done much about it, due to poor inhouse communication by the sounds of it.
I really would like to know if there are others suffering the same issue as me or if its just me ?

There are having another go tomorrow then bringing it back home so need some back up stories to hit them with

If you wash the car then go out for a drive does anyone come back with the inside of their alloys caked in black watery gung or are they clean ?

Please reply

thanks

No issues here as i blast the disks with a power washer until the water is clear and no black gunk afterwards

Latest from Audi

they claim it is a characteristic of the vehicle and its brake dust coming off the driveshaft, hub etc once washed..........

Im very dubious and will see how i get on with it once i'm home again

Not believing their story much !!

Why don't you move the car forwards and then jet wash again, is it really that bad?

That's exactly what I was thinking
Mine don't produce much gunk, but you can always jet the holes out, move the wheel round and then jet them out again
If it's still producing gunk, then it's possible it's coming from somewhere else ?

Will find out what it does once i'm back home from Angola next week.

Will take video clip in the hope it does what it normally does as evidence

Yep really need to see a pic,
I get a certain amount of light coloured dirt in the alloys from the brakes after washing but nothing to worry about,
but if its clumps of gunk something doesn't sound right!
