Just for fun - List of Wife Excuses

Post by boff » Mon May 11, 2015 10:11 pm

Right, so I'm visiting all the family friends, taking the mrs out to far away destinations to look at new houses, "popping to fix a mates computer" (200 miles round trip), i'm flying from manchester instead of london on Thursday for a stag doo...

....chuckle - so I'm sat watching telly thinking, what excuse do i have at 10pm, to just pop out? Thoughts chaps!!!

Suffice to say I love it, it's great, and wondering if I should get it detailed and see if we can make mythos show it's true green and blue specs :-) (looking at SM Detailing)

So answer please:

A) Excuses, funny only
B) Detailing? do i bother? - i have to say the mrs is struggling here, with all the metal I've owned i never detailed it.
C) Hand car washes, are they safe?

B!!!

A- I'll plead the 5th on that
B - is a hell yeah, I have had all my cars detailed and it makes a world of difference, not only at the time its done but for the future too. I have mine finally bookd in for 2 days work the 2 days before I take it to Goodwood FoS, picked the date as I have F1 paddock parking so want it spot on.
C - Convenient but not good, there cleaning products use a lot of salt so overtime those scratches you spent 100's of pounds getting the detailer to remove will return.

B and C are a complete contradicton!

Detail it.

A) who needs an excuse?
B) detailing is good but I'd let it earn a detail first.
C) so many of my colleagues scoff at how they get their car hand washed by others as they are too important to wash it themselves.....little do they know the long term damage they are doing to their paintwork.

Thanks Carsarecool - I think the general consensus is just get it done, but your comment "let it earn it" is a decent one indeed. Let me put the hand cars washes into perspective in London though, they are the norm, more common than a jet wash, and there are probably three distinct types:

A) Man in a Van - usually really decent, comes to your place of work
B) Men in a drive through garage - I used these guys for years and had no issues
C) Men on a supermarket forecourt - I'd say to be avoided completely

My wife would be thinking I was having an affair I just said I was going for a drive at 10pm :)

I've used the ukranian bloke drive-thru car washes from time to time, but you have to ask them not to use any of the spray chemicals they like to blast your car with.
Those chemicals will screw over things like anodised metals surfaces (exhaust tips) as well as ceramic brakes if they're hot or left on there
Plus they tend to use industrial strength jet washes which can remove badges, raise the edges of any clear protection you've had fitted (the car already comes with two small triangles by the rear arches - these can lift too)

Your car is black...the worst colour if washed badly as it shows every minor scratch. I don't trust anyone to wash it other than me. Sad it may be but I really enjoy it.

Having a door dent removed next week for £60 as it is annoying me.....but I am saving a detail for when it really needs it.

A. I'm just taking the car for a walk
B. As you guessed it would be a yes from me. The Gtechinque is brilliant. I did a round trip to Carlisle and back from Birmingham and theres not much grim on the car to show for it
C. Not unless you really have to use them. Its not just the chemicals, they use the same wash mitts to clean everything. Dirt, salt, etc gets transferred from the bottom of the car in front to the bonnet of your car.

A. I heard a funny noise from the back left corner. I'll just pop down to the servo, check the pressures and give it a run. I don't want to get caught on the way to work in the morning. By love, back soon! :bigblink:

B. Yes, if you have knowledge of their work

C. Never, ever, not even to ask them the time of day. I worked at one as a kid, yes many many years ago. Still the same now. The other comment on washing rags go from dirt under to paint over certainly happens and that does lots of scratching but even more so is that the staff leave their watches and belts on. I always took my watch off and wore a soft belt (because I cared about the cars).. But ... It happens so quickly that the watch strap or the belt buckle scratches the paintwork. Hey presto, re spray time! And you won't notice till later and even then what can you do. Um ... Just don't. Oh yeh, do you know how keen they are when vacuuming out the inside too ... That machine sucks up lots of things. Be warned. :FIREdevil:

I'd say get it detailed properly at first. If you do this your routine maintenance won't be too much of a chore. The detailer will be able to advise how you should keep on top of it between details.

OK OK

Chuckle - so, tonight

A) Darling, I just need to pop to the range to adjust the weighting on my driver (don't even like Golf)

B&C) Loud and clear. It will be detailed, and I have spent (as you'd expect) lots of time researching who. Guys I have spent ages on the phone to Shaun at SM Detailing:

https://www.facebook.com/SMDeanDetailing

So I have looked at elite, and all the great guys down here - but I've never felt so confident about a decision than going with this guy - a Full ceramic detail is £550, but the thing that has sold me is his Facebook page, he'll do any car, and to the limit - if you look at his posts the enthusiasm just bursts through, you speak to him and he happily talks about other products, even tells you where they are better.

This guy looks like a complete legend of detailing in the making, and I'd encourage you all to give him a bell - straight down the line, incredibly passionate and technical, and zero zero arrogance. Did an RS4 panther recently and it looks amazing, I just want him to have my car!!!

what do you all think?

He uses Chemical Guys - but frankly I'm not an expert in product, I'm buying a service and into a person who will look after me and the car - I have to say I'm bought in!! He even offered to teach me how to wash the car!!! chuckle
