Factory Rotors - Anyone else have rough insides on fronts?

Post by milesg » Mon Mar 30, 2015 4:26 pm

Hi guys, I bought an ex-Demo car with 3,000 miles on it. I was wondering if the front wheels have been refurbed as the insides (as in reach through the spokes) are rough and the rears are smooth. Is this the same with everyones? I cannot see the refurb (normally have a good eye for these things), but I was not told about it at PDI.

Thanks

Could just be brake deposits ingrained in the wheels maybe?

Might have been resprayed to hide degraded paint. Fronts do get warm.

Definately a different texture on the inside, cannot see respray evidence. The rears are smooth as.... I will ask my stealer!

All mine are smooth inside and out (owned from new with currently 900 miles on the clock).

I've been told the titanium finish is near impossible to replicate due to the inability to create the semi-matt finish with just paint. I had 20" Titanium Rotors on my C7 and 2 were refurbed on one side by the dealer before I picked it up. What I found when washing the car was the 2 which had been refurbed were harder to clean (the brake dust was ingrained deeper), and were very slightly matt/rough (only slightly though).

It sounds as if yours may have been refurbed, but how do the spoke edges compare to the face?

The faces look ok, but they are definitely rough internally....

I cannot really tell much of a difference and assumed that they coated the insides of the front because they get hotter or something....

It's not tar is it? That collects inside the wheel.

My wife once had her Mini wheels refurbished at a "reputable" BMW dealership whilst the vehicle was in for other work. The refurbisher did a splendid job on the wheel face but failed to clean inside the wheel before starting the work. The overspray went on top of the existing dirt and left a rough finish similar to the one that you describe; possible explanation?

It's entirely possible that Audi use more than one manufacturer of wheels, so it might be that one has a slightly different paint finish to the other, but will be otherwise the same (almost certainly use the same casting moulds and flow form tools)
When I was at Honda, we used to use both Hayes Lemmerz and CMS for Civic R wheels, and they'd regularly get mixed up before production
If you can be bothered, take them off, they should have a part number, manufacturers stamp and some info on material/aluminium grade (probably AlSi7mg) on the inside face of the spokes

If the dealer says that they've not been repainted, then that could account for the difference in feel

Alternatively, the manufacturer might have a variety of paint lines/facilites producing the same wheel, and the inside of the rim should go un polished (unlike the face which has powder coating, diamond facing and then lacquering), so that might account for the difference too

Thanks all.

Cleaning them today, I think that they may have a powder coated finish the same as the spokes, which probably does point to a repair....
