Torque Talk vs BHP Bluster

Post by carsarecool » Sun Mar 15, 2015 8:07 pm

On the way back from seeing the old girl today I had a blat with a 535d. I could tell he was up for it. A mate of mine had a 535d a while back and had it chipped......he used to bang on about how quick it was vs. petrol cars. 600 lb/ft of torque it had blah blah blah. On the motorway torque was king.

Anyway, I bumped into the 535d on a nice stretch of road and it opened up for us. I have to say I thought it might be a drubbing but in fact it wasn't. We came to a round about and both floored it. He had the charge but I was right behind him AND gaining. I was past him pretty quickly and he was going backwards. We levelled at the next r'bout and he pulled along side. "What hp has that got? I told him and he said he was running 400bhp. A quick thumbs up and off we went our separate ways.

My point - our measly 300-odd lb/ft is plenty :)

Good result, can't be doing with getting beaten by a diesel
I had a similar race in my b7 with one, luckily I pulled on it, not massively though, that was before the MRC stage 2 :FIREdevil:

Meh, the devil's fuel. Now how do you think you'd have done up against a 535i... chipped?

Well it might be evens at first but then 100kph - 200kph is mostly a torque discipline, so I might say Torque Talk would do your BHP Bluster.
So your point of a measly 300-odd lb/ft is plenty, is probably true against a car with a torque spread narrower than an American's grasp of geography.
On a 535i stage 1 - 2 it ain't so simple, they'd have 400+ft/lbs available from <2k to 5.5k, then a headline of 330-350BHP at around 6-6.5k and still pull to a 7k redline. It'd be an interesting match up with the B8's rev range and what sits below the power curve but I think it might be a similar result to the tuned B8 S4 vs stock B8 RS4.
At least you'd still have the Audi warcry.
No matter where you go, there you are.

I'm quite well placed to comment on this as one of my best mates has a 335d Xdrive touring and we've been on trips loads of times and raced lots too
If you were talking (or torqueing :beerchug: ) in gear acceleration and no sudden downshifts, then the BMW does leave my RS4 standing initially as the massive wave of torque in the diesel engine is mighty impressive from under 2k
However, if you're both in the best gear for the race, or I've had the chance to plant the throttle and let the Stronic do it's thing, then the RS4 leaves it for dead
I'm guessing this is the same for the 535d, but even more so due to the extra weight it carries

You got to be careful if you come up against one though, as quite of few of the chip tune companies do a simple chip that gives the BMW diesel engine 40% more torque, and that I fear, might be a whole different game

Example here, although this looks to be a B7 ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKP7JUD84sw
-------------------------------------------------------
Gone - 11/06 B7 RS4 Avant - black/black (Daily drive & kids taxi)
Gone - 05/13 B8 RS4 Avant - Suzuka grey (Daily drive & kids taxi)
Gone - 01/14 B8 RS5 Coupe - Short term car
Gone - 09/14 B8 RS4 Avant - Misano Red/Ceramics (Daily drive & kids taxi)

Current - 04/18 B9 Rs4 Nardo Grey
ZX10R Race bike - 210bhp and a few skid marks on the seat ;)

nice link...

IMHO - diesel engines should be left for taxi's and buses...no need for them in a proper drivers car...
