How hot are you running?

Post by copperband » Fri Jan 16, 2015 9:59 am

Hi, after another member kindly pointed me in the direction of the oil temp display I am now using that each day to ensure car is well warmed up before making it work too hard.

I notice when fully warmed up and driving along the motorway (7th gear so lows revs) the oil temp is about 102.

That surprised me a bit as my old S3 always ran about 90. On track days it used to go up dramatically to 130 or more.

Do you all wait until the car is at full op temp before you boot it or do you consider once it registers at 60 that the oil is suitably working?

Agree mine is running 102-106degC and the air temp has very little effect on it. Even on a long gentle cruise in 7th with 2.5krev still runs around 103degC. I initially thought there was a problem as previous performance cars ran cooler. After some research it seems normal to run at these temps.

Thanks guys, I am reassured. Maybe big engines run the oil a bit hotter like this?

Chill Winston........warning lights come on if there's a problem :) (it won't let you boot it until it's ready)
