Distorted DAB...

Post by smudge » Thu May 22, 2014 12:04 am

Is anyone else suffering from what seems to be distorted DAB reception in the SW/W London area? It appears to be intermittent, but over the 7-10 days I have noticed the reception around the M4 corridor from LHR into London & around the West / South West London area, the audio is distorting quite a bit. Swapping to either FM or an alternative source & the issue appears to go. I'm not sure if its my cars head unit or a transmitter issue.
It's all torque talk.

I commute into Chiswick from Surrey and I haven't had any issues. Will try some different channels on the way home tonight....

Radio 5 live was ok but XFM had a regular low frequency crackle. All the other channels that I scanned through were fine. FM also fine. Amazing what one can get up to crawling along the M4!

No worries and I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with the car - what I sure about is just how many utterly bonkers channels that are being broadcast........

And that's a major contributor to the poor audio quality - they are packing more and more channels into the multiplex which means that the amount of error detection and correction is reduced, so when signal strength gets weak or you get lots of multipath (e.g. from surrounding buildings) it's not possible to correct the received errors and the sound quality is cr*p.

The dirt will eventually fall off if you leave it upside down long enough :)

Hey Smudge,

Are you still having issues? The last couple of days it's been fine - apart from the bonkers channels!

I've not been out in the car since the weekend, but will be tomorrow, so I'll check & report back.
