Manual Mode Problem

Post by L10LPT » Tue Apr 08, 2014 10:35 am

Hi Guys,

First post on here and looking for your help.

Picked up my new RS4 a few weeks ago and think I may have a problem with the transmission whilst in 'Manual' mode.
When in manual I have noticed that the car occasionaly upshifts by itself without any input from myself, seems to happen more when the car is cold and seems to happen when accelarating in 2nd gear it goes into 3rd all by itself - anybody else experienced this problem.

I am speaking to the local dealer but keen to know if this is a common fault - I am also comparing to my last car (BMW E90 M3) which didnt have such a 'problem' as I could hold onto any gear for any amount of time.

Look forward to some responses.

Cheers

This isn't normal. Happens immediately in S cars when you get to the redline and in the RS if I recall it spits and farts at you for a while then eventualy changes up, this is when gunning it though.

Could be a number of reasons, I think they have may have a reduced limiter when cold although that could be complete rubbish :drink: which may mean it will change up to stop damage to the engine. I know my RS6 has because for the first 5 miles or so it shows a reduced limiter to around 5500rpm. Also how many miles have you done since getting it? My gearbox went through a running in period for the first 500 miles and wouldn't change into 7th in auto mode until it got to 60mph. After 500 miles it all changed and after that is ran fine.

If in doubt though get the dealer to look at it :beerchug:

Thanks for the responses, the car is due to go back to the dealers this week for a check.
Strange thing is that it also can go from 1st straight into 3rd in Manual

When you say manual, are you shifting the stick over to the left or just initiating manual by using the paddles ?
I know it sounds obvious to us owners, but if you're using the latter method, then it'll go back to D or S after a period of time anyway. This would explain your 1-3 shift ?
If it's over to the left in proper manual, then it is fully manual and won't initiate this change once the engine's up to 60deg oil temp (you can see this on the lap timer screen, but only shows numbers once past 60deg)

Hi Graeme,

No the stick is definately over to the left.

I would also say that even when in 'auto' the car seems a little bit slow on the uptake unless its in Dynamic.

I did guess as much, but thought I'd ask just in case
It appears to genuinely be an issue then, so throw it back to the dealer
