1998/9 S8 Ownership-Good or Bad?

Post by badger5 » Tue Mar 09, 2004 10:47 pm

Hello
I'm new here but am interested in getting an S8.
Are these reliable motors?
What should I look out for when buying one?

Would one make a good tow car for my Ibiza sprint car? (1119Kg)

Had a Ur Quattro a few years ago, and since had an A6..
Want back into Audi's.

Can anyone help advise?
many thanks
regards
bill

Hi Bill. Welcome to RS246
I'm sure Chris will be along soon with his notes

Is it Bill with the embarrasingly quick yellow ibiza that put the wind up the other cars at Brunters last time

Hello, thanks for the welcome
Tis I.. yellow Ibiza man. Brunters was fun was'nt it.

Have a MKIV Golf too with more power but heavier so similar performance to Ibiza. Looking for a nice comfy motor tho, which could tow the ibiza if needs be. S8 is a car I have lusted over for some time. Tiptronic, satnav, BOSE are all wishes...

Which RS4 was yours @ Brunters.

 I'm a new member too!!!! :P I have just aquired a 1999 S8 and the one piece of advice I offer is a correct dealer service history...check it with the dealer too. Mine had a full history stamped in the book but when I had the 120,000klms service carried out they checked the history and it's only had oil changes and a 70,000 service. As for reliable this is my 4th Audi (my 3rd is in the UK) and they are on a whole sturdy hard working cars...parts can be expensive but they last years longer than the parts you may buy for a ford escort....

Joys of S8 Ownership

Post by rjpatrick » Sun Aug 21, 2005 8:56 am

I sold mine (W reg) after 2 years (30k to 60k with me) on the about to get expensive principle. The only major problem I had was the non waterproof ECU, which cost me a grand. Also deep concerns about getting bodywork fixed as colleagues with Al Jags having them out of play for months due to problems fixing bodywork dents and scrapes (minor) which seemed to be completely beyond Jags abilities to fix. Great car otherwise, now have 03 RS6 which sounds and goes better but miss non engine silence and some of the creature comforts (memory seats with more degrees of freedom particularly).

Also see enquiry for good southern servicing in RS6 postings - any suggestions welcome. Best service experience so far was in the go to Germany category which whilst nice isn't always practical.

Good Luck
