Moving to a RS3

Post by ricje » Wed Mar 22, 2017 7:41 pm

Hello all,

Simple question. Does moving to a RS3 from a 2010 RS5 make sense? Driven a 2012 plate one briefly but couldn't open it up due to the edgy salesman. I know the interior and tech is way below what I have (reversing camera, drive select with sports diff). And I'll miss the V8 sound...But I need a boot and can't afford a 2015+ model at £37K plus! Any help? Cheers

The original RS3 was supposed to be awful to drive. Great engine though. B7 RS4!

Had a b7 rs4 before the rs5. Epic car. But stuck in traffic too much so wanted the dual clutch!!

8P RS3 is pony. Handles like a wheel barrow with flat tyres. Worst car purchase I've made, ditched after a year.

8V is a nice drive. Understeers still, but still fun.

Also looks more like an RS than the 8P due to the twin oval exhausts.

Yes driven the 8V. With dynamic pack. Great car. But out of my price range! Hence the idea of the earlier model.. You are right about the looks though...

Paul on here sold his C7 RS6 for an 8P RS3 to modify but sold it very quickly and ended up with an 8V S3 and is really happy with it. Have you considered an S3? They look amazing in saloon format.

Yeah they do. And obviously rs3 saloon on route as well.

Doesn't have that 5 pot sound though. And having driven a golf R assume the same??

Liked the idea of somewhere for the dog if needed (the boot!!)

Yes same engine as the Golf R but for me better as I prefer the look of saloons. But yes you are right it doesn't have the noise of the 5 pot. I'm not sold on the Rs3 saloon yet, maybe need to see one in the flesh and in decent colours.

No I agree. The S3 saloon is a beautiful machine. But dog would die in the boot . Love the 4 pipes as well. And can get with the virtual console... but the 5 pot..

Yes all lovely features, but yes it is still a 4 cylinder engine.

Or get an S3 and transplant a 2.5l 5 pot from a TTRs or RS3.

Nothing wrong with the 8P RS3 apart from the understeer issue which is a quick mod to rectify, I've had mine since Xmas and I love her, pop over to the RS3 forum and ask the boys what they think mate

^ what's the mod?

I think it's difficult to go from a torsen Quattro system being permanent AWD with a rear bias to a haldex based Quattro system that is predominately FWD most of the time.

Again, I can say that as I've made the move. Albeit to Mercedes equivalent, but that was because the Audi option didn't drive or communicate as well. Torsen Quattro is still king, especially when mates to a V8 AND a manual gearbox.

I'd rather compromise on an aching left leg than bad handling, so again the B7 gets my vote if you want most of what you've got with the B8 at a reduced cost.

Watch it, I'll probably be in an RS3 next having said all that.
