Stiffer ARB on rear end sorts the understeer out, I do however agree that the Torsten system is great having had a B5 S4 Avant but I find the Haldex system has evolved well and having had both an S3 and a 4motion with the original Haldex unit I can see it's greatly improved and works well when needed

Moving to a RS3

Sorts as in fixes or reduces?

The 8P RS3 is not a great car. It was always a parts bin special and the tech was horrifically hold at launch. And I speak as someone who bought on me new to replace a much loved R32.

Engine and gearbox great, the rest, meh.

Well mate I like it and at the end of the day all RS models have their bad sides, it's all down to personal preference and the word is understeer is practically non existent with stiffer ARB

Agreed uprated ARB's help to provide reduce understeer. It was the same on the B5 platform which was a 50:50 split. The B7 induced a 60R:40F split and this MASSIVELY improved on the B5, with the addition of DRC of course. Add upgrades ARB's in top of that and you can imagine it's handling.

I'm not anti haldex, as I have a current version haldex car, but it's definitely inferior. The benefit for the masses is fuel economy through what is predominantly a FWD car.

The Golf's are definitely harder than the equivalent Audi. R32 ARB's used to be a mod people did on their S3's etc.

Agreed mate Haldex is far from perfect but it's getting better, I'm looking to get a performance controller which should sort out the understeer even more, the 8P isn't perfect by far but I like the little RS and a few tweaks should sort the handling out, engine and box are outstanding and I'm not a big fan of DSG but am a convert

To be fair- slightly put off. But only slightly. Another £13k gets the 8V which won't be a downgrade from the RS5 inside... a lot of money though!

Plastics are definitely cheaper in the A3 chassis cars, but it's not 'low rent'.

Focus RS?

Focus RS?

Too showy. And golf R too common and engine note is naff- sooner get a s3 for superior interior...

The golf drives better, but agree there are a lot about due to cheap lease deals. Focus in black, etc. Not the blue. M140/240i on one of the cheap deals? A45? What is the budget? Agree the 5 pot sounds amazing and truly iconic for Audi.

Mate has new A45 AMG (new as in a bit more BHP/boost) still sounds naff no matter how many pops from the exhaust! Could consider a BM.....

^ agreed, it's the sound I dislike. Not sure an aftermarket exhaust will do it any favours either.

Pistonheads review of the new saloon:

My favourite bit:

"Could that be the car to rejuvenate the RS3, to evoke the spirit of the legendary B7 RS4 saloon and to give enthusiasts a great small Audi? Not exactly."

I owned the b7 rs4. I prefer my current rs5 over that- and it got mixed review on release...

Late to the thread but having had an 8P RS3 for 4 year I thought I'd chip in. It depends on what you want from a car. The tech is dated but isn't from the dark ages.

Looks wise if you took the front from the 8P and the rear from the 8V it would be spot on. Limited numbers help the 8P on residuals.

Ride is firm but not uncomfortable, best mods are the 034 rear ARB and secondary cat replacement pipes. Set of MPSS's / Goodyear Assy 3's and Redstuff pads all round will sort out ride, grip and braking

Hatch boot is very handy, rear cabin room a lot better than the RS5. If you can get a well sorted example for early to mid £20's it s a no brained. Stage 1 remap it with perhaps an Intercooler and it'll keep up with most cars 3x + it's price and give you 30+ mpg all day long.

I only traded up as I was at a point of chasing more power and performance at the end of the PCP I had and at the time. For the price of the 8V saloon with the options I would have wanted I got what I have now which ticked the box of more Performance.
