Just saw this thread, I owned an RS3 and got rid for a Golf R.

I only kept it a year. The engine and the DSG make it a fast point to point car but it does end becoming a bit clinical. My biggest problems with the car were continued brake issues - high pitch squeaks no matter how you drive! Vibrations through the steering wheel - Audi could not fix this. CV joint problems.. lots of rattles!

Make sure you check the car hasn't been remapped, lots of them have!

Would it need an Audi dealer/specialist to tell if it's been remapped, or could any dealer check for this?

The (only) previous owner is known to the dealer; he's been in regular contact with them since he PXed it. I've asked them to ask him. :)
