Brake screech - the final straw
Brake screech - the final straw
'My' rs3 is actually the mrs's ride and she is now so bored and annoyed with the whole brake squeal thing that she returns it every week to the dealer (blackburn, who in fairness are sympathetic and give otherwise excellent service). However this week will i think be the fourth or fifth time she's sent it back, so you'd think that they too must be getting bored and annoyed with it. She is adamant that she will keep dumping it back on their forecourt till it's sorted and is now starting to say she wants her money back or a different car, which I think is a great pity as it's otherwise a great car (and i like driving it whenever i get the chance!).
The dealer has so far come up with various failed solutions and explanations including 'it''s because the pads are 'meant for the race track not for the road' (!!!). For my own part screechy brakes don't bother me that much but I can understand that she says she hates the way it makes people look, comment etc especially in carparks, shopping streets etc to the extent that she doesn't want to drive it any more. I've trawled this forum and others and see other people with the same problem and that some have reported back to Audi uk, but is anything being done collectively? If so, please could i be added to the list (happy to give full contact details by pm) or if not am happy to take the lead and collect other folks' details to forward to Audi. This could be this particular RS3's last chance of a reprieve!

Take a looky here :-

There should be an official Audi UK fix coming out in March.
In the meantime I'd ring Audi UK and complain, and get a reference number. They are well aware of the problem.

Re: Brake screech - the final straw
Maybe changing the pads for say yellow stuff! with plenty of copper slip on the back of the pads, anyone tried this ???
Re: Brake screech - the final straw
I'm going through this with my S4. I've left it and the dealer until its sorted. Got an S5 cab replacement. See here:

Re: Brake screech - the final straw
Apply anti-squeel shims and copperslip in the meantime until the official fix is out. If you don't have faith in Audi to do that, an independent should be able to do it in an hour. Shims are £18, most garages will have copperslip. Shame for the car to be rejected over such a simple solution.

Re: Brake screech - the final straw
Good luck rejecting the car on this ground alone.
All audi have to say is that the nature of the car requires high ceramic compound brakes and this has the side effect of additional unavoidable noise.
If there isn't anything fundamentally wrong with the car then you've not got (imo) much chance.
As above - just change the brake pads for something softer.
The squeal is most likely down to the higher ceramic content being cold and just rubbing on the disc. To prove if this is the case or not, do about 10 good solid non-abs 70mph - 10mph braking actions (as if you were following a bedding in procedure) and then with the brakes nice and hot see if they squeal. If they do then yes, likely to be something amiss with the anti squeal shims however I'd wager that the noise will be better. If so then it's simply the choice of pad coupled with the driving style - either change the pads or adapt driving style to avoid light braking (but I guess thats hard with s-tronic gearbox)

Re: Brake screech - the final straw
Thanks guys, let's see how we get on.
I completely agree ref a stupid reason for rejecting a car, but try telling that to the Mrs!
Blackburn Audi seem to think otherwise! I shall inform them. They are well aware of the problem.

Re: Brake screech - the final straw
Just read the above thread... OMG audi... Seems a simply f*ck up with the pad and caliper choice where the piston is simply cutting through the base anti squeal layer on the pads.JonG wrote:Take a looky here :-

I can't believe that they are only relying on that meterial to stop squealing on a high performance pad! bonkers!
Yes, you'll definately need anti squeal shims to solve the issue.

Good point. I was wondering if his other half had made a decision about how best to proceed.adsgreen wrote:Whoa - only posted yesterday morning!Nickyboy wrote:Any update gord? This thread is of particular interest to me
Also as ads said, it will be difficult to reject the car.

I have only heard good things about this stuff as a brake squeal solution - http://www.kenteurope.com/uk/shop/viewf ... &type=Auto

ads, there are no anti-squeal shims on them. Those that have applied Mintex ones invariably have eliminated this issue. But it is not an OEM fix.
Re: Brake screech - the final straw
Thats the point - most (if not all) pads have a very thin anti squal layer on the back of the pad. But by the looks of it this in'st enough for the RS3 setup.P_G wrote:adsgreen wrote:Just read the above thread... OMG audi... Any performance car I've had IIRC have used anti squeal shims.
