Brake Judder

Post by geek » Sun Feb 03, 2013 8:12 pm

This started last week after a waterless wash; thought it was just rust / residue not cleanly coming off post wash but the judder appears to have set in. It isn't severe but it is enough to be noticeable... (done 200 miles since the wash with some heavy duty breaking action for the last 60)

Anyone had issues?

Mine is at just over 4000 now....had intermittent squeal issues after excessive town driving but otherwise the brakes have been flawless.

Brake Judder

Post by Dave_Hedgehog » Thu Feb 07, 2013 4:08 pm

Yep I have developed a severe judder grinding noise from the brakes, started after the heavy snow and has got a lot worse

I wondered if it was the road salt / grit but it seams unlikely now

NSF snatches and pulls the car left as well ...

I've not had this. Would new pads solve it (in March maybe..) or needs discs also?

I've had new pads and shims but still noisy at very low speed.

Another off topic: Aluminium carriers for front discs, have they corroded badly?

I know this might telling you how to suck eggs but have you tried this method http://zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

as stop start town driving can build up deposits on the disk causing judder under braking also was the Audi recall for this or brake squeeking

Wasn't the recall for over heating? My was a later car that had the vents drilled.

Mine doesn't get driven in town, the brakes are exercised as Audi intended regularly.....the judder has just appeared after 4k miles.

As said, I did do a touchless wash immediately before the issue surfaced so could be rust and brake residue on the face of the pad from this....200 miles done since then and judder still apparent.

Good trip out due tomorrow, we shall see if it persists.

That sounds ominous! I hope you can clear it up with a spirited drive soon. :beerchug:

Otherwise they may need skimming.

Brake Judder

Gave the car a full wash today and pressure washed the brakes properly, I also checked tyre pressures and the offside front was 5psi under pressure; a rapid 26 mile circuit later.....not one ounce of judder.

Go figure.....

Brake Judder

Post by geek » Wed Feb 13, 2013 9:10 pm

Did a long run down into the south west today; judder is back with a vengeance.

Not apparent with constant / regular application below 50mph, sustained motorway speed with infrequent braking exposes it vividly...feels like crap modulation / uneven application of piston pressure to the pad. Breaks perform consistently but feel unbalanced.

Could be callipers in this crap weather but suspect the disks are shot. Interesting prospect considering it only has 4600 on the clock.

Onto Audi first thing.

Even with the above, still a blistering stack of haldex spawned fun :-D

Brake Judder

Car is booked into the stealer.

Spoke with the Master Tech, he is ordering in the parts so he has everything on the shelf.

They have 2 RS3's that they look after and both are recorded with Audi Europe / UK for the dreaded squeal...he is taking the opportunity to look at status on the squeal issue alongside my reported judder.

Customer service experience continues to be excellent.

Did he tell you what parts he's ordered?,This happened to me with my S4 i read about brake squeal problems on audizine and that audi usa were replacing the whole front brakes [discs pads and callipers] told my dealer he checked and said there was a brake upgrade kit but did not know what the parts were, anyway when i took it to be done there was indeed discs ,pads and callipers they've been ok ever since.

As far as I am aware the much discussed RS3 break squeal still doesn't have a permanent solution.

Mine is going in for a judder issue; Master Tech was ordering in replacement disks and pads, no mention of them being anything different to the current stock item.
