Front grille/number plate

The reg number I am putting on the RS3 is very 'short' so I usually use cut-down plates. I assumed it would be possible to remove the back plate which is attached to the grille on which the plate sits, but it seems to be more firmly attached than I expected. Has anyone else removed it and if so how the heck did you manage it?!

One of the guys on rs3oc has removed his but still trying to figure out how to fit the plate. Might be worth asking over there
