Front wheel spin / torque steer ???

Post by HYFR » Fri Nov 30, 2012 7:33 pm

First drive home tonight in the RS 3

I know its cold at 2/3c but I never experienced this in the TTRS at all!

So from a standstill or rolling start, if I floor it through the gears, not even maxing out the revs, the front wheels spin up and the TC starts flashing

It is driving like a FWD car?!

The TTRS jus had bucket loads of grip regardless of the conditions

Is this normal? Or is it broken??

Never experienced this in a quattro Audi before!?

Not as bad as that but I do get quite a bit of wheel spin / TC flash in my 3 when flooring it in 2nd. Honestly, the OEM tyres are pants. They will need at least 500 miles to give up some grip. Haldex controller is on my list of mods. In the meantime I have winter wheels ready to go on so hope in the cold these will be a bit more grippy.

What was the split in the TT-RS? IIRC it is normally 70/30? The RS3 is almost like 80/20

I was going to suggest those crappy Contis are to blame but you probably had them on the TTRS too didn't you?

Hhmmmm....surprised by this

Now I really am believing that the TTRS is truely the fastest car in the world!!!

Iirc the TTRS ran on Pirellis...

Bit of a let down to honest especially as we enter quattro season!

Another thingvis the RS 3 is so much quite in the cabin...i mean in terms of engine/exhaust note...the TTRS would shout as you at the top of its voice, whereas you can hardly hear the RS 3...I know is much to do with the rear seats/different bodyshape....but I do miss the wailing 5pot!!

But, I just went out and applied a coat of wax on the car and my god does it look awesome and just love the Suzuka

One of the reasons I went straight to Revolution on the way home from pick up to have the secondary cat bypass done as it was too quiet. Has made an appreciable difference. I suspect the Pirellis would be far more grippy.

Yep, mine does this as well, probably the reason why I will need new front tyres after about 8000. Agree, I don't like the conti tyres. On my TTRS the fronts were fine after 11,000 (Michelin). On the RS5's no new tyres needed after 14000 miles(Dunlops).

I really don't like this aspect of the RS 3 TTRS was so much better in this regard

new tyres will make a huge difference (someone told me audi dont use contis anymore on there new models) and if it still drives you nuts a haldex mod will cure it

That sounds quite bad ... I only usually get it for a few milliseconds in 1st gear.

I'd check your problem out a bit more ... I think there may have been a faulty batch of Haldex pumps which caused the AWD to fail in quite a few Golf R's :-

Front wheel spin / torque steer ???

I don't get this unless I floor it when you'd expect to get it.

Why would you expect it? The TTRS does not do it at all....at all

I wouldn't expect it on a new Quattro. My 5 year old B7 don't spin the wheels at all even in he wet unless my tyres need changing. I know the B7 is heavier up front and has fatter rubber, but I'd expect Audi engineering to be able to give the 3 enough grip to pull itself off the line without spinning its wheels.
