Shell VPower thoughts.....
Re: Shell VPower thoughts.....
Can I have some feedback from other RS3 owners, not point talking about other cars as the variables are too different.
We can only get 97 RON or 95 RON over here. I've only ever used 97 RON in my C5 RS6.
When I got the RS3 last year I did the same. Over the last year the car has really loosened up. It's now quicker and def more fuel efficient.
When the petrol prices were rocketing and seeing as I saw 95 RON is allowed in the RS3 (says so on the cap) I starting filling up with it to see if there was any difference.
2 months on now and the car is running great.
I would like some feedback on what mileage you are getting on a full tank. I not talking about what the DIS says but what you actually got.
I have a habit of filling to the brim and then only refuelling when I almost out. I know this can be bad so don't lecture me. Obviously driving conditions change etc but now I've settled down with the car I don't drive it like I stole it (every day!) and most of my miles are commutes and over a full tank are pretty consistent.
Had to fill up this morning and I noted that I got 355 miles on my last tank (95 RON) and the DIS said I could go 5 more. I've filled up with 97 RON and plan to do so for the next 2 fills to see if I really do get more and how much.
What are you guys getting? A year ago I was under 300 for the first few fills and then under 320 for most. 355 is the best for me I think and again that is with "the dreaded" 95 RON.
What say ye? (RS3 only)

Re: Shell VPower thoughts.....
if your worried about fuel costs why buy an RS? if your worried about running costs why buy an RS?
You could buy an oil burner A3 and halve the purchase cost and fuel costs as well.
UK cars are mapped for 98ron and sould be run on 98+, they can run on 95 but will produce less power, its typically in the range of 10-15% less on a blown car with a SUL map (Although i noted that the stage 1 VXR owners where reporting a 50bhp loss on 95) , think of 95RON as an emergency get you home when nothing else is about
I look at fuel costs as a tax on fun, its just something you have to put up with
Anyone who gets more than 250 miles on a tank on an RS3 (i get 200-210) should have it taken away and be given a volvo with a matching tweed interior and slippers and also a pipe

Interesting reading and all what I thought from my own unscientific research!
I've always run all of my cars on V power, both diesel and petrol
Both the X5 and lotus are tuned
I did notice and decrease in fuel consumption in normal driving with the X5, aided by the remap
As already mentioned why would you spend so much on a nice car and then save a few quid on fuel - although I accept that DK doesn't keep some of his cars long enough to worry about it!
Luckily for me there is Shell garage just opening about 1/2 mile from house now which will make life easier....I found myself having to go for a long drive to buy some then thought well I've got the car out so might as well go a bit further and before I know it I've pulled up at home with half a tank again !!!
Just on a vaguely related topic, shocked by
Dave's comment that he only gets 220 miles per tank, what do the B7RS4 and B8RS5 owners get out of theirs?

Re: Shell VPower thoughts.....
I don't think people are worried about the cost of fuel but just wonder if it is worth it. If its not worth it then why bother I think is what people are getting at.
My fuel cap says 91 or 95 RON, I have filled up with 99 this time and will give it a few tanks before I make a judgement but when I do I will post back. Not an RS3 I know but interesting nonetheless.

there are several mag studies and a fifth gear dyno test on SUL fuel that have shown that blown cars get a big boost form high octane fuel, especially if they have a SUL map

I normally get around 230 miles per tank. The majority of my driving in the middle of the night as part of my job. No motorway cruising, virtually all on national limit roads. No horses are spared. 18mpg and big smiles all the way.
I got 340 miles on one tank Newcastle-Southampton a few weeks back, averaging just under 26mpg. Something similar on the way back up.
I always use V-bastard.
Re: Shell VPower thoughts.....
Thanks for everyone's input.
Put a full tank of v power in today and picked
up a fuel card....might help a bit

Re: Shell VPower thoughts.....
I've started using momentum and half a tank in I am noticing worse fuel economy and zero performance difference. Does it need more time?

Re: Shell VPower thoughts.....
At what point do we assume worse fuel economy?
There are too many variables even if you do the same route everyday that could put your consumption out by 1-2 MPG, traffic, driving style heck even a stronger head wind or use of the heated seats etc... if you want to be really geeky. There would need to be a 4 MPG difference minimum to accurately measure if you were getting better/worse economy taken the above variable into account.

Re: Shell VPower thoughts.....
I do exactly the same route and over the last two weeks have kept a close eye on it. I do similar speeds throughout and leave so early that I don't see much in the way of traffic. It has been on average 2.5mpg worse over the half tank. I understand the variables and similar test etc, I have studied science and engineering for the last 9 years of my life.
It's only half a tank and only a few journeys, I will be keeping an eye on it for a longer period. My post above was only initial observations.

Re: Shell VPower thoughts.....
It takes a few fill ups for your ECU to fully adapt to the higher RON. If you use momentum you should hear a slightly "raspier" exhaust note, particularly after a long motorway journey.Nickyboy wrote:I've started using momentum and half a tank in I am noticing worse fuel economy and zero performance difference.
