Audi has responded to technical problems with the brakes at the top models Audi RS3 and TT RS and offers a free brake replacement on a modified brake system.

Once customers have been complaining about a half years delayed braking in the wet, stuttering, loud squeak and high wear, the manufacturer has redesigned the brake system on both models. Stephan Reil, Head of Development at quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm, where RS3 and TT RS will be built, and Florian Heuberger, Head of Technology at Audi Service, announced in Auto Motor und Sport that the operator of the affected vehicles can free replacement of the brakes. Affected up to 5700 models of the RS3 from model year 2011 and 6100 TT RS from model year 2010.

Exchange for parts availability from March

"All customers will be helped - free", Quattro Manager Reil insured against auto motor und sport. Audi has modified the brake caliper and the brake pads to eliminate the most common and occur mainly at low speed squealing when braking. The delay in braking effect when wet Audi plans get through a software update in the handle. "An increased since June 2012 and employed in the service aufspielbares ESP update the frequency with which after turning on the windshield, the brake pads are always easily placed on the discs to displace splash," said Quattro development chief Reil. To reduce the thermal load on the RS3-brake, since June 2012 protects the right of the front apron a breathable pinhole built in, which is also upgradeable.

In mass production, the changes in the coming weeks will also be incorporated. Could, however, the exchange in the workshops ", depending on the availability of parts at least until the end of March or longer extend" estimates Heuberger. Audi sees no need to act on the other hand wear. "According to our specifications and hold the brake pads about 30,000 miles, the discs get twice the mileage -. Provided proper treatment"

Haven't checked it out yet with dealer.

Can anyone confirm, as mines due a free service in March and prefer if true it's sorted at one visit?

I'll be asking my supplying dealer about this tomorrow as well.

For the second time in as many days my brakes felt terrible today with no braking friction available on initial application when not used for a while in extreme wet / snow conditions on dual carriageways to the point they needed to be pumped 2-3 times for retardation and then when they did work the car pulled from one side to the other as the pads found friction on one disc to the other with pads grinding against metal. A scary feeling in this type of weather, almost feels like the water / snow is getting between the discs and pads. Anyone else experienced anything remotely similar? This isn't just a need for shims.

Flip heading home tonight and car was going really well and handling the slush no worries. Coming down a hill on a dual carriageway (nothing in front) touched the brakes and nothing at all!!! Started pumping and started to get better and then all good but scary. If I needed to stop in an emergency it wouldn't have happened!

I would always dry my brakes once I splashed through a puddle but this felt a bit different.

My dealer last week fitted new pads and shims and will replace again with the improved pads when released!!

Prob is now I have to bed them in again just in time for them to be replaced again, what a waste! :bash:

I suspect mine is not a pads issue but more an ABS disc cleaning (or lack of) issue. After getting heat back into them they work fine but I don't want to be unecessarily hammering the brakes every couple miles on the dual carriageway to do so. I wonder if this is what part of the ABS TSB reflash is about?

Spoke to supplying dealer today. Nothing showing on system regarding a recall as yet.

I currently have no brake problems, so not affected by issues others are reporting.

RS3 Brake Recall

Mine were atrocious today, no rhyme or reason though, just sounded like a knackered old bus at random intervals.

Gun it, pull up quick and it goes; I am convinced this is a pad compound problem.

I am sure ceramics will be the only cure :-)

The noisy squeal problem has been diagnosed on another forum ... it's the back of the pads, where the pistons push that is the problem.

A simple anti squeal brake shim will cure it (as it has mine) ... just waiting for Audi to come up with the official fix now.

Mine have been silent for over 1200 miles since this fix :-

More REVELATIONS…

I believe the brake pad for the RS3 and TTRS have changed 3-times and are denoted by the suffix in the Audi Part Number, like so:

1) For the 'early' brake pad (TTRS most likely): 8J0 615 115 N (20S)

2) For the later brake pad (a 2011 build RS3, as mine) is: 8J0 615 115 R (20S)

3) And for the current 2013 'upgrade' the numbers are: 8J0 615 115 S (20S) for the right-hand pad and 8J0 615 116 K (20S) for the left-hand pad… that's RIGHT, the pads are now handed/directional within the brake caliper.

PAGID? INTERESTINGLY the 2011 brake pad (as in 2) above) has Audi (part) reference numbers, Audi logo, and Brembo logo all painted on the backplate of the brake pad

BUT of greater interest are the following characters 'engraved' into the backplate: PAGID AQ 04 (you can just make out the name 'PAGID' on the photograph of the brake pad in the previous post...

So it's an Audi brake pad, supplied by BREMBO, with PAGID friction material…

mine went in today for an initial inspection, dealer was superb, confirmed they squeal

however because i only complained about my original car and not the replacement this may cause some problems as its now done 10k miles, although to be fair its only done that because we had to wait a year for the fix

i have lots of video of it making the noise under braking thou, fortunately i have only had "no brakes" 4 or 5 times so far, although one was at high speed when a lorry pulled out in front of me, stopped with 8 inches to spare ...

they flashed the gearbox whilst i was there, i have had a couple of instances when i lost all gears, and flashed the awd system for a fix to stop launch control ripping out the drive shafts
