How to tweak sports exhaust??

Post by seventeenAPG » Mon Aug 15, 2011 3:44 pm

Unfortunately when I ordered my RS5 I did not know that if the sat nav was not ordered then there was no capability to set up the steering/exhaust/suspension etc seperately. I have only 3 settings to choose from.
I want to get the exhaust set for dynamic "permanently" so I get the full exhaust note irrespective of which of the 3 settings I choose. Someone please please tell me how to override this ....

Sat Nav was not standard on the RS5? I thought Audi were finally making Nav standard on top end models?!

Unfortunately not, we have to pay something like £1900 for the privilige and I absolutely believe that it is not worth the money particularly when you have to pay Audi almost £300 for an updated DVD . I preferred to put the money into more uselful accessories. But I believe Audi should have given the option of cherry picking the settings to EVERYONE. After all this is a 60k car with dynamic driving capabilities running through its veins. I was not told that I needed this by Audi and it is not clearly laid out in the various catalogues and on line sites that you need the sat nav system to do this. :audibash:

And no one has yet given me any idea if I can manually get the exhaust note to stay in the dynamic mode. I would be happy with the car set in "auto" with the exhaust in "dynamic" if it were possible.

Some say that keeping the flaps open improve the mpg, some say that it even helps the engine to breathe better. Some even say that it makes the engine more responsive. All I know is that warble coming from the exhaust at all times is great!!

I found out myself how to keep the flaps open at all times and its real easy. Pics etc to follow at weekend.

I have driven the car for a week now with this mod done and I can see no detrimental effect to the running of the car. The exhaust sounds great at all times and a little bit of drone in the range 40-50 in 7th gear. I am not suggesting that this mod is carried out but just giving the heads up on whats possible.

If anyone wishes to carry this out lift the mat in the boot and you will find what I think is a vacuum tank at the left side. You will see a small black rubber pipe that enters through the rear metal panel. This pipe leads to both of the flaps. Simply remove the pipe from the connector on the tank and place a blanking plug on to the connector as shown in the picture. I guess anyone ( I mean those with MMI) can also carry out this mod so that the flaps are open at all times. It is my understanding from reading various threads in the B7 RS4 forum that, even in sport mode, the flaps open and close within certain rev ranges.

Thanks SAPG. I got refrred to this forum from A5OC becuase I'm asking the same questions as you! I'm also trying to find out how to do exactly the same thing only by tapping into the electronic control to achieve it ( since it's already there ) I've got the full sat Nav with MMI but still cant set it the way I want it. Anyway thanks for the heads up on how to achieve it mechanically too.

After further thought. I think the black device with the red and yellow wires, is probably an electronically controlled valve that links ( pneumatically ) the resevoir to the flap contols. Therefore if we can measure what happens ( electrically ) on those wires, when the switch is set to dynamic. ( In one of the two states it's almost certian to provide +12v on one wire and gnd on the other ) we could then emulate that with a neat switch on the dash. (That's assuming some people may want to turn it off ! )

Thanks and you are correct; it could be that this controls th evacuum to the flaps. The black tube that I have taken off (seen in the above picture just above the red/green wire runs right through to the actuator on the silencer and to the flaps. If I reconnect this pipe with the engine running at tick over the flaps close. When I thne remove it I can hear the hiss of the vacuum pump. From what I can glean on the RS4 forum th eflaps open and close and various times throughtout the rev range and this is how it could be achieved. For me I loke them open at all times hence vacuum pipe removal!!

I've found another way of achieving what I need and that is to set the gearbox to 'dynamic' in my individual settings and to drive with the gear selector lever set to the left in the manual mode. That way I have best control on when it changes gear ( including the throttle blip on down changes ). I'm happy now!

Ah, you see this is where I fell on rocks. When I bought the car I did not get sat nav because, with the RS4 and in N Ireland, I just didnt use it. I thought it a waste of money and decided to throw it into a sports exhaust and other goodies that I would get the benefit of. What I didnt know was that you need sat nav to get the individual settings. I only have 3 and you just can't drive it in dynamic mode all the time. Not on Irish roads anyway!!

Just done this on mine, how friggin simple?

Just pushed on a cap from a presta bike innertube over one side, then push a bolt into the other and hey presto....mean sound all the time regardless of mode. Will take it out later to see if there are any issues or if I notice the drone. In theory if it's the same as when in dynamic, ie: valve open then the drone should have been there before? If not, then maybe the valve opens and closes during the revs even in Dynamic mode?
