Visited Neckarsulm and Ingolstadt today - pics + RS5 Info

Had a great conversation with a contact at quattro GmbH today and learned some very interesting things.

We were talking about the RS5 and he mentioned that it will have pretty much the same normally aspirated V8 as the B7 RS4, but with about 450 hp.

One of the limitations on the B7 RS4 was the challenge of getting enough air in and out of the engine - that it was pretty much 'choked' in the B7 RS4. There's just not enough room in the engine bay to deliver as much air as the engine needs to produce all the power its capable of, and not enough room for a proper-sized exhaust. The B7 RS4 has one throttle body and one air intake, and the RS5 will have dual throttle bodies and three air intakes - one of which will open only at above 5000 rpm. It 'should' also have a larger diameter exhaust system to help with the exhaust flow. Different engine management will also help with the power.

The throttle body conversation intrigued me a bit. He said that the RS4 throttle body measures 90mm and that the RS5 will have dual 70mm throttle bodies. Potentially one could replace the dual 70mm ones with dual 90mm ones and re-tune...

There will not be a B8 RS4, only the RS5.

The TT-RS will be different than other RS models before it, where it will be completely assembled in Hungary. All other RS models have had some portion of their assembly in the Neckarsulm plant.

I also picked up a few goodies, including "the last set of factory RS4 emboidered mats in Neckarsulm" :) , and some Euro tail lights that blink orange instead of red.

Also a couple of models - RS2, R8 V10, and R8 DTM Safety Car.

Tomorrow I'm hitting the new Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. I'm really excited about that...

Which is probably why the B7 is so sensitive to airflow...

@ 115hp/litre a la 997 GT3, the 4.2 should be capable of making ~480hp.

Cognizant of the flow limitations, I'm surprised someone like MTM isn't offering re-worked inlet/exhaust mods...

Just noticed the drivers side mat looks an unusual shape, they are for a B7 right?

Even so the left hand (drivers side) looks different to both my OE standard and OE upgraded mats.

Im glad the rs5 will retain the v8 4.2. Did they say anything regarding the exterior design? ie will it have a more muscular stance than the s5?

I think the muscular stance for an RS is a given...
