Seized engine

Post by MonkeyNuts » Sat Nov 09, 2019 8:07 pm

Hi guys, been a bit of a lurker always popping in now and again to see what’s happening. I bought a 2011 rs5 back in 2017, black 70k most options. Used it loads, loved it! Did a track day at brands but managed to break the brake master cylinder and goose the discs! It went in to Audi and after spending a small fortune the brakes were sorted! Although I supplied the hawk brake pads, they wouldn’t fit wavy rotors! Can’t remember the reason now. After 6months of fairly spirited driving, mixed with the usual day to day stuff it cut out on the motorway en route to its mot! Dash lit up like an Xmas tree. Coasted to the hard shoulder . Recovered to a specialist who diagnosed seized engine!
Is this common problem with the b8 rs4/5 and anyone know of a working engine for sale😂

Not unheard of here in N. America. There were a few lower mileage failures here but when the engines were replaced by Audi they confiscated the old engines so we never heard what the issues were. I purchased a 98k mile car with a seized engine and was somewhat afraid of finding something inherantly bad in the design but that wasn't the case. The good news is the cylinders looked good for that mileage and the valve train and guides were in very good shape still. An improvement over the earlier 4.2 design. What I found was the #4 crankpin journal for Rod bearings 4 & 8 was damaged a little along with the respective bearings. The rest of the engine bearings were good and from what I see I attribute the damage to a break down in the oil and/or oil contamination. I and others do recommend to change the oil at something earlier than Audi's intervals. The high revving engine is harder on the oil than most and any oil analysis you do will show you that most oils will start breaking down much earlier. I am doing mine at 6k miles, some do theres even earlier but the oil analysis on the Redline oil I am using shows that it is still good at 6k. I'm parting out my old engine as I found a 25k motor that I'm replacing it with.
