hello,
Thinking of buying my first S6. The one i have in mind is a 2000 model with 60k on the clock for £9k. I was originally looking at an RS6 but was put off by the running/servicing costs.
It would be really helpful if anyone can give some insight into runnning/servicing costs for a S6 ie cambelt/brakes costs.
Also is there the same problem with the shocks as there is with the RS6?
Any advice welcome and appreciated
cheers

Hi,
I bought a 2000 S6 in November 09, also with 60k on the clock. I couldn't afford the outlay for an RS6 at the time.
Not sure about the running costs as yet, my car is in being serviced at the minute with one of the specialists who are regulars on this site and Audi SRS. It's having the Cambelt and a few other bits so should know soon... The S6 does not have DRC, which is the faulty suspension that everybody replaces on their RS6 although I've heard that Audi will cover the cost if your lucky anyway. RS6 needs a cambelt every 40k S6 every 60k.
Fuel consumption is difficult, I get approx 17.5mpg on mixed runs, the best I had was on a 1100Mile run 21mpg. But then you have to expect that.
I think that the main difference is that the RS6 will pull your face off accelerate and the S6 is more of a fast saloon your not gonna break any records with it, but can take on a few sports cars and shame them, it looks a bit of a sleeper...
Other than that buy it and post some pictures. Also take it to a specialist for health check, and I paid less than 9k so barter a bit....

I bought a 2003 S6 avant in August 2009, and have put about 8k on it since then, with no problems at all. Mine had done 98k when I bought it. Petrol is the biggest expense...can cost £90.00+ to fill her up at a M-way service station, but I smile every time I drive it.
I did have to replace a CAT which was rattling when I bought it, which was around £600, but so far thats it. Fingers crossed for the MOT next month!
I also have a Lexus LS400 which is quieter with a better stereo, and had an A6 2.5Tdi before this......but the S6 is just a lovely car to drive, and in bright red it looks the dogs....absolutely no regrets. Go for it!

Sure an RS6 is going to be more to maintain, but not neccisarily a lot more!!!
I had a 2000 S6 avant previously and to be honest after 2 years, it cost quite a lot, fuel is the same MPG as an RS, suspension is not a problem sure, nor is it with an RS if you buy one with upgraded suspention. The cambelt are similer, tyres fairly close, brakes too but the gearbox went in the S6, and just to re-condition ot was £4K, new would ahve been £6K just had a new one in the RS at £7K so its pot luck unless you have warranty.
Personally, if you can stretch it get an RS, I have had both and I think originally I would definately have rather saved the money and waited for the RS.
Just my 2p dude.
