Arrrrgh gearbox woes

Post by mooman1000 » Wed Jul 29, 2009 1:14 pm

its gone south just when I need the car the most (well 2nd most - glad its not the week of the belgian gp :) ). Accelerate in 1st then nothing just revs until the ecu decides to change up then bang 2nd gear engaged and the car lurches forwards.

Just been diagnosed by my local ind audi specialist so need to get it to the place that will recon it for 2k+vat  at least they can do it while I am holiday for 2 weeks

Now to look forward to my missus going on about how reliable I said it was before I got it.

One good thing, at least green flag are moving it from my work to the place that are going to get it up and running.

Oh well lets enjoy a sunny holiday and pick it up on the 12th ready for its big run.

Can you get access to vag-com? I would try and scan for codes. Mine had problems in 3rd gear with juddering. £1840 for rebuild and judder still existed, gearbox company said the box was fine and it was something else, swapped out ECU's checked wiring etc etc. Ended up selling the car for under 5k. So might be worth going to a gearbox specialist rather than an Audi place to look at it. Where are you? Or else get written confirmation of the fault and what they will fix, also get the TC redone while the box is out.. maybe O2 sensors too as they are a pain to get at..

My garage did dump the diagnostic fault which showed as gear selection did not match engine speed - or something just as vauge, no other errors at all showed (he showed me the print out). No judder for me in 3rd, just start from standstill get to about 10/20 mph then no more acceleration just loads of revs to the change point as if you were booting it (6k rpm) then ecu changes to 2nd at which it think you are going a lot faster than you really are and bang whole car jumps forward with a squeel from a belt under the bonnet. If you drive it careful enough when it changes to 2nd you can come off the gas so you dont get the bang of power, but coming to rest it hesitates in changing down.

Garage drained a bit of trans fluid and it was black. Got them to replace the trans filter and put nice clean fluid in but no difference still there - something has gone wrong to burn out the fluid that was replaced in feb this year.

I chatted to a localish guy who works for a company in exeter that specialises in auto gearbox rebuilds and I mentioned the car but he had not heard of it, then told him the gearbox model. It turns out they are experts in the south west if these boxes ever need to be pulled and redone as they are used in bmws, jags, land rovers seemed pretty knowledgable about it.

Breakdown is 410 labour, 210 torque convertor and 1345 for the rebuild/recon + about 45 for the new transfluid - as I am on holiday from sat they have the car until at least 11 Aug so plenty of time to sort it out. Did get a price for a pulled box with 2 months warranty with 52k on it and it was 575 inc delivery but car already at specialist so will leave it there now.

My garage was amazed I still had a smile on my face what with the pipe going at the start of the year and setting me back £1200 inc cam belt etc. I did say if it was not for the savings account it would be a different matter. Once its back up and running it still needs the exhaust fixing got and rs6 one to stick on and two new front tyes. And then around xmas it will prob need a service.

Good stuff, might be worth thinking about an external oil cooler, as mine leaked and nearly scrapped the box. The cooler itself is only about £110 so would be cheaper fitted while no fluid etc is in the box.. Hope you get it sorted. The problem with mine was that it never showed any vag-com errors.. well its away now..
