Cambelt Change Shock!

Post by rudedog » Mon Feb 16, 2009 3:16 pm

Just had the beast in for a major service & MOT

It was pointed out by the garage that the cambelt had some slack in it, and I was advised not to drive the car.

I was expecting the belt change at the next service (giving me another year to save!), but having checked the service history dates, it was 5 years since it was last done. Don't feel quite as robbed now, although the wallet has taken a hammering.

For anyone who's interested: £820 all in, including rollers, tensioners, dampers, waterpump, belts, bolts, coolant, labour, VAT. That's at GCS Engineering nr Horsham.

Major service was done at Audi Five Oaks, £440 all in. Their quote for the cambelt change wasn't too much more, but I know and trust GCS, and in these tough time, I like to support the smaller players too.

Oh, and I've got a small coolant leak from the oil cooler. Could be a gasket, could be a new cooler. Fingers crossed!

I have just had this lot done, major service was done in Dec for about £500 ish.

My coolant leak turned out to be a pipe between the oil cooler and the engine block. The garage replaced the gasket while there but its a job to do it as a load of stuff has to come out before you can get to it (read front offside engine mount!) Also had the belt done with everything as was not carried out correctly by previous owner, and because of that even the little piston that holds a tensioner in place was replaced.

My bill worked out as 5.5 hrs to investigate and fix the collant leak - which at £50 and hr was not bad + parts and 4.5 hrs for the belt, gearbox oil change and mot, got a 10% discount on all labour so it was mostly parts that stung, final bill weighed in at just over £1200 inc vat, gulp!
