S6 advice wanted

Post by TiTony » Fri Dec 21, 2007 7:16 pm

Hi,

Properly new to the sight but really like it. Currently own a B6 3.0L A4 but wife and I have decided that an '00-'02 S6 Avant would better suite or travelling requirements and 'no use during the week' type things down in Londinium.

Just looking for advice on what are the best points to look for when buying one of these beauties and also what are the most frequent ownership issues so once I get the precious thing then I can spend the money early to actively replace anything that commonly causes problems.

Hope somone can help.

Hi, I'm another Tony and also looking for an S6 but a saloon version so will be interested in any advice given too.

All I I know for certain is to make sure the cambelt is changed at leat 20,000 miles before it's due (I had one go 25,000 miles before due on an A4 2.6 V6 (which cost over a grand to get sorted and that wasn't by Audi!)

I also understand that the Tiptronic gearbox is a bit weak for the job, although I have only heard this from one source so I'd be interested to hear if this is true.

The LED displays have a common fault on many Audi which results in an incomplete display - you either live with it or spend lots replacing the whole unit.

Can't help any more but will eagerly wait for any responses like you!

Good luck finding a decent one anyway - it shouldn't be too hard, and although they are quite rare, there aren't that many buyers either (as far as I can tell anyway). Hopefully they'll be several come along at the same time - like buses (hmmm...maybe that's the wrong analogy!!!) :greyrs4:

Hi & welcome to the site ,
well as with any of these cars make sure they have a good history , Take a good look at the brakes and tyres and when it had a cam belt change ( make sure it had all the parts changed inc water pump & thermostat ) not just a belt .
All the best grizz

To all that assisted,

I thank you for the advice. Unfortunately my wife fell in love with a blue A6 4.2 Avant '02 and it was such a bargain at 8k that with low mileage and a service of 2.5K two months ago that I bought it. I know that makes me a bit of a fraud on the site but it comes with all of the bells and whistles so I'll still be asking on this forum for the good advice you've sent.

Good luck with you're S6's and possibly if the right one pops up when I'm next looking then one will be mine.
