I changed the oil myself and used fully synthetic. As my A6 is a 1999 model, it is not on the long-life oil - thankfully! The engine takes 7.5L, so best to get 2 x 5l containers, and a filter is around £14 from Audi or £6 for non - Audi.

I believe most petrol engine oils to be miscible. If you are just topping up, then chances are you are only putting in a litre or so. Bearing in mind your engine holds 7.5L, as long as you put a GOOD oil in, of similar viscoity, then you won't do any harm, even if it is different from what is in there. If you think you will be adding alot more than 1 litre, then I would opt for a full oil change if I did not already know what was in there! I really don't know if yours is a long life oil or not - I only know that, for some strange reason, the long life oil costs heaps more than normal oil - even if you go for a good one!
As you probably already know, Audi will charge you a fortune just to change the oil - shop around or DIY.
Hope this helps
PS I put question in regarding your wheels - can you help?????
