Hello,
I previously had a C5 RS6 which I loved but changed car for a variety of reasons. The replacement is pants by comparison and I'm looking again for something a bit special. My question is how does the S6 fair against the RS6. Looking at a 2000 model. Looks tidy FSH etc 120k on the clock. Do these suffer from the same gearbox problems ? Are the brakes cheaper than the RS6 ? What is the mpg and yearly tax ? Any other things to look out for ?
Cheers
Andy
S6 vs RS6
Re: S6 vs RS6
FON.
I think they had fewer GB problems due to less torque but then again, they're a pretty rare beast and that's probably a marginal percentage. The S8, Rangerovers, Jags, BMWs etc with the same 'box all had issues. Fuel is shocking (probably not that much different to an RS), pads and discs are cheaper, tax is probably £230ish a year now.
Other things to look out for? Actually finding one!

No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: S6 vs RS6
You're asking the wrong person, I run two heavily modded C5 RS6 so an S6 to me makes no sense. I'd look at an E39 535 over a C5 S6, great car for the same money and a lot more dynamic.
I just don't get the C5 S6, the C6 S6, yeah maybe but the C5 S6, nope.

Late spec S6 (03 onwards) are lovely, same spec as an RS6.
Lovely V8 N/A noise, not very fast but far more reliable than an RS.
Great underrated cars.

Re: S6 vs RS6
I love my S6 C5, i would love a RS6 but the running costs are to high for me at the moment.
rs6 discs and pads cost a fortune,
rs6 will be more economical than a S6.
If your looking at a RS6 gearbox and suspension as well as brakes are the things to look for.
I bought my S6 with more than its fair share of problems, gearbox is good though.
LPG system needed looking at, brakes were crap, fogs missing, wheels all mismatched etc.
Shes ok now and for 14 years old looks good as well.... still cuts the mustard and is nearly quick enough....lol
Now on 144,000...
The V8 with Milltek noise is epic...i don't bother with a stereo anymore...
One day i will have the RS6.....

Re: S6 vs RS6
Unless you specifically need an estate, also consider facelift 1999-2002 shape D2 A8 4.2 quattro Sports and S8s. A lot of car for the money - probably better value than the C5, and probably more reliable tooS6Chiel wrote:Hello,

Danger with going from a C5 RS6 to C5 S6 is that it will only make you miss your RS!
