Newbie Q - Bose, radio OK, CD/tape dead

Hi, Ive had a look on the fora for more info on the Bose unit and can find various combinations of things working/not working but not this combo.

The radio works fine but if I put a tape or CD in, it plays for 30 secs then stops and just emits a 'bonging' sound. like the old seat belt warnings on Fords.

From other posts this may just need a reset code of some sort... anyone know what the code is, or what the problem is and how to fix it? How do I apply a reset code?

PITA to take it to a dealer just for this, so hoping someone here can help.

Welcome, i am fairly new here as well.


i would guess that if it plays for 30 seconds that it won't benefit from a reset, it sounds to me as if the unit is broken.

i have recently fitted a Navigation plus unit, and a code is required to even just switch it on.

i have an old S6 BOSE CD/ TAPE unit but you will need to swap the front plastic face, as mine had broken removal points and was damaged on the way out.

Let me know if its any use.. you would need to send it off for a reset code as i dont have it.

Hi Marky_mark, thanks for the offer, I may take you up on that but now have a couple of things to try first.

I've found an independent garage in Guildford who seem really good - bloke was straight up to speed on the car and ID'd a couple of points which are in contrast to the official Audi guys who apaprently know the car. Will be interesting to see who pans out right! More info to follow on that.

As far as the stereo unit goes, apparently the head unit gathers signals from the chosen source and feeds them down signal cables to the amp in the boot space. If the amp loses a signal it produces the 'bonging' sound. The +/- buttons on the steering wheel dont work either, and there is a Parrot hands-free phone system installed, the head unit for that is also dead.

The guy took the head unit out to check cables etc are OK and although they appeared to be, he couldn't get the unit to work. When I drove the car away, the CD player worked fine for 10 mins... then went back to bonging sound. Switched to radio, works fine, tried CD again, worked fine for another 5 mins.

We suspect the connector pins on the back of the stereo head unit have been damaged by someone chasing down the Parrot head unit and/or steering wheel button failure. Being moved has caused a partial-reconnect. We'll try re-pinning the connector and see how it goes. Could be a nice cheap fix!

Soooo, late update on this but in case it's of interest/help to others.... Steve at Hall54 in Guildford (top bloke, see www.hall54.co.uk) re-pinned the connectors on teh Bose unit and everythng worked fine for a couple of months but the CD started missing again the last few weeks, so we suspect either the head unit is tired or there's a problem with the connectors to the amp.

Questions of the +/- buttons on the steering wheel solved too - they don't work with the stereo, but when the gearbox is in manual mode they act as paddle shifters. Guess what I played with all the way home
