RE: Anybody from Newcastle or North East
Hi Mac,
Once I sell my house in Surrey (soon I hope) I'll be relocating close to the Darlington area where my wife's from - am a big Toon fan by the way - I'm new to the forum also having just bought a 2001 S6 saloon last week (would show a pic but can't see how to do it yet!). My third Audi but this is the fastest I've ever owned and intend to keep forever - I really love it.
Up the Toon!
Tony

Tony, thats a lovely bit of kit. What miles are on it? and what sort of MPG you getting? I was told they weren't much different to the rs.
I really want an RS but the more and more I read on this site about the problems with them I'm not sure. I am gonna really do my homework on my next motor!

MPG depends a bit on what sort journeys, but on average I'm getting 19.7mpg. It can do about 24mpg on a run if you're not heavy on the pedal for too ofetn. In all honesty I do put my foot down every now and then but I still have a smug expression driving it modestly (to keep my licence), and it's always so nice to know that the power is there as and when I want it. It's incredible how normal a drive it is on a light throttle though, such a Q car, although petrolheads clock it straight away. I love the expression on some people's faces who have no idea how fast it is though, especially when I leave them for dust!
I've driven the RS6 and love it, it is significantly faster of course. However, I feel that it's too much of a beast on the road for regular use (although I expect all the RS owners will disagree with that) and I think the mpg is a lot lower (not sure about this but 12mpg ? if you're driving it the way it wants to be driven?) I haven't had time to look at the RS section yet, so can't comment on reliability, but I would have thought that the turbos and other hard demands on the rest of the car would take their toll fairly regularly.
It's a personal choice of course, but I consider the S6 is a better car for everyday use and the RS6 better as a fun/ track car. If I ever have enough money to have one of each then I would definitely do so without hesitation, but I'm not that rich so I'll have to buy an extra lottery ticket and hope for the best!

Hi Andy - I'm sure you won't regret buying an S6 if you can find the right one. I've been trying to find out from someone who's done an LPG conversion on an S6 myself but no luck so far.
There's no doubt that it would make a big difference to the fuel bill although it could then be tempting to use it even more, which would defeat the object to a great extent, though even more miles of fun
!
Otherwise LPG makes a lot of sense, everything I read says there's hardly any difference in performance and you can switch back to petrol when you really want all the extra power anyway.

There's a guy on Pistonheads who has done the conversion on an A8 4.2, which is roughly the same engine and I've seen a few S8's done, so I know it can be. Got a quote from a place called Greenfuel, cost around £2500, and halves the fuel bill.tonyS6 wrote:Hi Andy - I'm sure you won't regret buying an S6 if you can find the right one. I've seen a few up around the £9k mark, I might push to £10k, but would definitely want the LPG doing - I figured at 20mpg @ 53p (roughly) it'd be costing me £65 for 500 miles. As a comparison, I was thinking of a Focus ST at first (at £13k) and that would be costing £105 for 500 miles. So you can see my logic in getting something like an S6, doing the conversion and gaining a big smile.
Yes I've seen a couple of S8's around that have been done but I haven't been able to get any feedback from anyone, and although the engine is the same it's still a different car to own.
So I'd be unwilling to spend £2500 without a couple of glowing endorsements from some S6 owners really.
It would also take a while to recover the initial investment, but more significantly I've also read that LPG may well start becoming more expensive as the government no longer want to encourage LPG and will start raising tax on it.
They used to subsidise LPG installations, but as you probably know they stopped doing this a couple of years ago, which speaks volumes of course.

Just been reading your thread about LPG and thought i'd let you know about mine. I bought the converted RS6 that's been mentioned a few times on the forum a few months ago and had it down at MRC Rolling Road weekend for AudiSRS forum. Took it down on friday for remap and gearbox mod and made 498PS and 698Nm. Car drives great and got equivalent of 48mpg on run home at 80+ mph ave. Worst i get is 32mpg. So much for all the disbeleivers that thought LPG conversion could not make std 450bhp let alone 500bhp. I will be posting remap power graph on site later.
Guys, I might be selling my 2003 S6 Avant in a month or so.
Its Silver, very well specked with everything bar SAT Nav.

Not sure what its worth, but I have a RS6 as well so I dont need two V8's
