Upgrades

Post by stuartridge » Wed Jun 18, 2003 10:39 am

I may be looking at upgrading the performance of my S6 (2002) - are the chip upgrades worth doing to non turbo cars and if so what benefits am I likely to see. Any other ideas (not too costly!) would be welcome.
Thanks

For me, NA tuning: first step is to make it breathe better: Higher flow exhaust/cats, air filter and maybe head flowing. Lot more poke than a NA chip change.

Why not NOS? Essentially similar to turbocharging in that you increase the mass of oxygen in the cylinders to allow you to burn more fuel and you don't have to go stupid with the jets. Less thermal issues than turbocharging too. People get so frightened of NOS and they are justified when they put 150bhp jets on a stock 1.3 Golf engine and find it blows up in their face. I would have thought the S6 V8 should cope easily with the occasional 25 or 50 bhp boost. Insurance issues - yes, but I can buy N2O for less than £5 per kilo (medical grade, commercial grade should be cheaper) so not that expensive to run. You can trigger it on WOT to make sure you are not continually using it for no reason. Pay for the power when you 'need' it and treat it with the respect it deserves. Progressive controller will allow a smooth power delivery too.

Lee

PS I have to point out that I am not a fan of 'Farce and the Farciest' because it was so full of technical inconsistencies with people shouting jibberish to sound cool(Me, sad? - maybe). More of a fan of NOS since I first read about WWII engines using it for generating huge horsepower at high altitude where there isn't much air. Hmmmm that reminds me, I have a 2000 psi pressure vessel and some suitable solenoids in the garage....maybe a shot of NOS to keep me occupied before my 400 bhp comes!

I think S6 in stock form is very nicely balanced package and there isn't much you can do performance wise, without spending serious $$$. I would leave it stock and this is what I have done with my car. Sure, I have another car, which I'm modifying , so I still can burn my cash, what would be life without it ! Check out this page, there is lots of useful information about S6 upgrades:

Hi guys, this is my first post, so Mr.Stuart.. I have a 2002 Audi S6 and I'm planning for modifications. I found a cold air intake and exhaust system from LLTEK.com they say it gives 25 horsepower, and a computer chip from motodyne.com will get you 40hp. 1077$ exhaust + 166$ intake + 896$ chip = 2116$ for 65 horsepower gain. sounds resonable to me cause you will have 405hp!!

Baha, do your research, I would question anyones claims as to be able to acheieve a 65hp gain from the mods you listed...

Maybe if it had a turbo or supercharger, but because it NA the power is going to be harder to extract!

You might be right S8n, I mean.. in my post I said that those companies claim there products produce such gains, but I did my research and found that 20-25hp gain is easily attainable by reprogramming the computer only. Add cat-back exaust system and cold air intake, they are good for at least 10-15hp. Some companies reprogram the Automatic transmission chip for better and firmer shifts. By the way.. motodyne.com supercharger kit sells for $13,000 and good for 50% increase in power!!

There's a chap on Tyresmoke.net that has 400+ from his S8 with chip, exhaust, etc from AmD. If the engine is the same then that's near the figures that you're talking about.

Wowee!

I was beginning to think no one looked at this forum anymore!

I'm trying to sell my beloved S6 Avant at the moment (see ebay link below) but if it doesn't go I'm certainly going to go the supercharger route.

Let me know how you get on.

As the S6 weights a lot I would suggest first think about weight reduction. The wheels are the first ones to look at it. The avus looks great but it is like a fat guy on your car.
As for performance up-grade, try searching for a forced induktion system. It might not cost that much if you do a custom tunning. A friend of mine has done an S8, for around 7000 U$. The car is running twin turbos, 0.6 bar and has 460 HPs. Safe but really strong.

Best Wishes
WOT

Beware of Motodyne!!!!!!!!!! They are widely known for ripping people off in the USA!!!!

Do some searches, you'll see what you find!!!

By the way, HP gains don't add up like this: exhaust=5HP, chip=15HP, intake=10HP=> total=30HP, it would be great if things worked as in GranTourismo but they don't really in real life. I'd say 20 to 25HP with a chip, exhaust and intake kit should be feasible on an S6 though...

I looked into this when I had my S6 and came to the conclusion that you had to spend serious money (£20k+) to get any substantial gain and decided the cheapest power upgrade option was to get an RS6. Power upgrades are one thing, but the knock-on cost to transmission which hasn't been designed to take the extra power can be colossal!
