I got one

Post by tombs » Wed Nov 01, 2006 2:07 pm

Well this area of the RS246 website is rather quite! I’ve taken the dive into an area I wouldn’t thought I would take but I’ve gone and bought a 2000 S6. Picked her up for incredible money and had a great drive back from York yesterday. A very different animal to my RS4, totally luxurious and more refined in its power delivery. The RS4 was really aggressive compared to the S6, the power delivery is smoother and more controlled but that’s to be expected being non bi turbo. The RS4 was awesome and a real bullet, the S6 still pulls strong but in a much more relaxed way. The S6 I bought has a full Miltek system on her and really makes the V8 growl which is a really pleasant sound. The interior is really luxurious and amazing considering the age and mileage on the beast. Early days yet, but overall I’m pleased. It will fill the gap whilst I save my funds for the RS6.

Anyone else on here who has the S6? If so I’d be interested in hearing about the ownership and costs etc… cheers fro now.

'Lo Tombs

Glad to hear you are enjoying the car. I have had mine since June, a silver 2001 saloon. I understand what you mean by the power delivery, I much prefer the NA response to my turbo charged S2, I gues there is no replacement for displacement.....

Ownership experience was brilliant right up to this morning when the coolant temperature warning came on. The fuel bills have been a little daunting, even coming from an S2 which is pretty thirsty, but are worth every penny.

Hi Steve,

Great to hear from another S6 owner, thought they may be thin on the ground, probably even more rare then the RS4’s! Snap, mine also in Silver and a Saloon, but I have the Miltek exhaust system and RS6 wheels with a boot spoiler which set the car of nicely.

I can see from the all the paperwork that came with the car there is has never really been any small amounts of cash involved when spending money on her! At least I can see she has been looked after.

What’s up with the coolant Temp, has it been dumped all over the ground?

Cheers

Tom

Hi good to see a post in the s6 section I have a 2001 avant goodwood green had it since january. I've done 11000 miles since I got it including a run down to switzerland with a few trips to the speed limiter on the autobahn.
The cars standard except for a set of later s6 18" wheels and a rs6 rear spoiler and a removable tow bar I use it to tow my rally car it makes a realy nice tow car.
As for running costs not bad so far except fuel (lots and often) I've put new front disks and pads on it not to dear and the first set of tyres are getting a bit low rekon they're good for about 12000 miles. Next expense is cambelt due in 3000 miles.

Hi David,

A rally man eh? Used to work on RallySport Magazine and had the great pleasure of being taken round Goodwood race circuit by the god of Rallying Hannu Mikkola at a recent Audi press car launch. Love the sport, and I think you guys are the best drivers around!

Not bad costs then overall by the looks of things David. The fuel consumption I'm used to jumping over from the RS4, I felt on the run back from York the S6 was a little more generous in mileage and she seems to hold at least another 100 miles range of fuel then the RS4.

How much have you been quoted for the cambelt change?

Cheers

Tom

Hi local audi approved repairer (ex dealer) is quoting about £400 I havn't priced it anywhere else yet. I'm also going to change the gearbox oil as I dont like the idea of filled for life oil.

The s6 may go further then the rs4 but its got a big tank 82 litres, 20 more than an rs4.

Hi Tom,

Sounds nice, I looked at a black one with RS6 wheels and spolier, nice looking car but it had issues, I also thought the front brakes looked a bit small to which my darling wife (bless her) replied 'oh, you should upgrade to RS6 brakes as well then'

They are pretty rare as if you compare it to the M5 of the time it looks a little lacking, especially with the S8 on top of it, so sales where pretty poor, but I love it, so discreet...

Coolant is all in its proper place, no leaks and the level in expansion tank is on the button, so I must assume the sensor is duff. I'll VAGCOM it later for a better idea but if it is the sensor it looks to be at the top of the engine so I may have a crack at changing it myself, otherwise a flat bed to MRC beckons.

Cheers,

Steve

OK, now this is weird. Plugged VAGCOM in last night, no fault codes stored and no alarms raised. Started the engine and it ran fine, both coolant and oil temperature raised as normal and I drove it to work this morning with all being OK. So, did I dream it? Is there some weird mechanism to alert you to the fact that it had dropped close to or below freezing? Could the instrument unit be faulty? Any ideas?

I had an S6 for nearly three years and loved it. Had a similar experience once in France and stopped immediately to look for the problem. There was the remains of a plastic shopping bag plastered plastered over the grill, blanking most of the radiator.

Kev,

hmmmm, that is a good suggestion, I'll double check if/when it happens again. So far so good, oh, apart from a split outer CV gaitor discovered whilst having a punctured tyre changed. Ho hum, more expense...

Hi,

Just jumping on the band wagon as the little brother to the S6 - the 4.2 a6, which I love to death - all the toys and proper recaros! In black guise with recently added rs6 front grill and rs6 replica wheels.

Anyway, I too am shopping round for a cambelt change and have called sevral audi garages, all giving different quotes. King's lynn Audi have given me a fantastic price, as have South Hereford Audi. Around the £450 mark, but not including Tensioners/rollers/water pump.
Where are you located and was your £400 including anything other than cambelt and alternator belt?

Thanks guys, Chris
