New S4 Spec. Help !!

Post by irmclarke » Fri Jun 08, 2012 12:35 am

Hi Guys,

Have been browsing the forum for a while as I gradually try to convince myself I need an S4 in my life! I've gotten as far as getting the local dealer to pretty much match the drive the deal price (£6k discount) making the car £41k. Audi finance seems very competative at the moment too. I think I have sussed the spec. thus:

S4 Avant Black Edition 3.0 TFSI quattro S tronic 333 PS

Ibis White
Leather/Alcantara Seats
Audi drive select
Audi Warranty 4yr 75000 miles
Damper control
Door mirrors – electrically folding and auto dimming
Heated front seats
Leather door armrests front and rear
Open Sky Panoramic sunroof
Audi quattro Sports differential
Mobile telephone preparation – Low with Bluetooth and voice control
Power-operated tailgate
Technology package – High
Rear side airbags
Audi Parking System Plus
Storage package

What I'm not sure about is:

1. Should I be getting full leather seats, I have always liked the Audi Leather/Alcantara combo but it feels like a £40k car should be full leather.
2. I had seen a lot of people mention the hill hold, not sure this makes much sence with the auto though (unless I'm missing something).
3. The sunroof feels like a good idea but is bloody expensive, any experiance?
4. Thoughts on Ibis White? I find (expecially in Black Edition) it makes the car look that bit more special ...
5. What have I missed?

Thanks in advance
Ian.

New S4 Spec. Help !!

Post by longdog » Fri Jun 08, 2012 8:56 am

Hi there, great choice of car! I took delivery of my Lava grey S4 avant black edition last month and for me it is the perfect car. My extra spec is as follows.
Black/red leather super sports seats - awesome!
Tech pack high - worth the extra
Storage pack - a must have in the avant in my opinion
Drive select with damper control - I love it but wouldn't say that it's a must have
Sports diff - Does change the feel of the car especially when pushing through the bends
Foldy heaty mirrors
All the black edition bits, love the B&O And ami.
5 year warranty
Autoglym life shine - excellent product

What I would say on your spec is that I wouldn't bother paying the extra for the carbon inlays as the piano ones look great. The sunroof is a nice option but after having 2 cars with them I decided to give it a miss mainly due to the cost and the fact that I'd rather use the air con over the summer. The auto tailgate was a no no to me as I had visions of my dogs getting squashed when I shut it! And it's not really that hard to close manually.
As for the white, Nickyboy on here has a white BE avant and it looks great.

White as you probably know is a pig to keep clean. I would only get it if you are the type to regularly clean your car. I clean mine a lot so it's worth it to me. Have you thought about getting the metallic red with the RS6 style wheels as that would look special also.

Hill hold is great and st only £65 I would say add it. It just means you don't need to hold the brake when stopped and means you never roll back. This can be done with the use of parking brake and/or foot brake but with hill hold you don't need to. Essentially when you come to a stop hill hold keeps the brakes on for you.

Your spec looks spot on to me.

I must have missed the storage pack on the brochure. What do you get with that?

Hi

I had an A4 avant with the pano sunroof and my sunroof creaked quite badly, audi did grease it up  but it did occasionally creak over bumps etc but rear seat passengers did like it.

Gotta get the supersports seats, most comfortable seats I've sat in as good as the old recaros from my RS4 (B5) and S3 (8L) days. Black/magma combo does look very pimp. If you can afford full electric even better.

Have you thought about Glacier white (metallic white) ?

Carbon atlas imho an absolute must, the yanks are even getting their trim recovered in carbon and it is traditional in an S/RS :thumb:

Also spec the interior light package gives you lighted footwells and door bottoms and vanity lights.

Don't bother with high beam assist, mine got confused by reflections from road signs last night, last thing you need when having a bit of a hoon.

Nicky the storage pack gives you nets on the back of the front seats, underseat storage etc.

cheers

Keyless is great if available?

Also with regards to the colour; white is very much "in" at the moment and I like it but I cant help but feel that may change in the not too distant future.

Glacier White or Estoril Blue would prob be what i would be looking at.

As my brother said at his Merc dealership; last year every new car leaving here was silver and now they are all white.

I have leather/alcantara in my car (black/siler on the SuperSports seats) and they are very comfy and grippy in the extreme. However, the silver alcantara might mark up easily as it's very pale, so next time I'd go for a darker alcantara section if possible. Other than that, you have a very good spec!

Thanks guys.

Hill hold actually sounds quite useful then for the money.

I'm inclined to swap the roof for the super-sport seats as these are getting a lot of positive comments, do you loose any rear leg room with those though?

As for white ... I'm torn as not sure how good I will be at keeping it clean these days but the car looks soo good in white ! There seems to be several grey options (which would be my next choice) what is the consensus on the 'best' grey?

As an aside I have also read a lot about the s-tronic not being particularly responsive yet reviews of the car go on about the great performance etc. I have to say from the test drive it did'nt 'feel' as quick as I was expecting (had a DSG Golf Edition 30 previously) but then I did'nt play around with any settings or even work out if it had Drive Select etc.

New S4 Spec. Help !!

In normal everyday driving it may not feel quick but one look at the speedo tells you otherwise! In sport/dynamic the car comes alive and would show any golf a clean pair of heals.
I don't have hill hold and to be honest with the s-tronic I really don't see the point of it. The heated leather is also very nice.

No issues on my saloon with rear seat space with the supersports seats, Monsoon grey I think is the closest to Daytona grey, which is a cracking colour imho, but have a look at glacier white, I don't think suzuka grey is standard but if it is

Go back and test drive it with the drive select in 'dynamic', its great you can cruise on the motorway in auto/comfort and then when you get off the straight roads hit dynamic and big smiles all round, I think on the new FL models it also gives you a different engine noise in the cabin via a 'soundakator' setup which pipes in engine noise fyi audizine.com is the best place for pics and info.

Light pack is standard. With regards to the carbon, if you do spec it just make sure it matches the piano trim that is around the speedo binnacle- this is standard on the black edition, non black edition cars have the silver binnacle surround.

Great spec Ian, and 100% agree with comments on Supersport seats, they're fantastic, have never got out the car feeling uncomfortable even after very long journeys. Leather/Alcantara decision - purely personal I'd say, both look great, leather probably easier to keep clean but may deteriorate quicker (saying that, mine still looks almost new after 75k). Sunroof works prefectly and I'm always using the tilt function on warmer days. Can't go wrong with white for the wow factor IMO, if you're a keen car washer as mentioned! Will look stunning.

Looking forward to some pics after purchase!

1. definitely heated leather supersports seats 2.the s tronic is not an automatic its an electronically controlled manual gearbox with two clutches thats why hill hold assist is a good option.3 i personally prefer no sunroof and have the climate control on .4 ibis white black edition good colour combination white is in fashion at the moment.5 bang and olufsen sound is also worth having i would personally choose that over the sunroof.whatever options you choose I'm sure you will enjoy the car.
