My journey from Bristol to South Mimms last Friday with the occasional spot of traffic but mostly on cruise at 69mph. I had a boot full and me and my daughter in the car with quite a few spots of air con pumping out cold air. It was using tesco 95 RON fuel as well. The picture is of me pulling into the service station slip road. Sorry for the blurry picture.

Anyway:

Remarkable - the most I've ever seen was 31mpg. Must try harder....

I was pleasantly surprised. I'm now running 99 RON, be interesting to see if this makes any difference to the mpg or performance. I certainly hope it will clear the black smoke I got after using Morrissons fuel.

Can only presume Audi have tinkered with the engine on the later models then, there's NO WAY I could match that on mine driving at those speeds, in agreememt with R1nga. There were a lot of complaints when the car was released about actual mpg because IIRC the car was advertised with a combined mpg figure of around 31 and no one was getting anywhere near. Looks like yours will get close to that. The 3.0 s/c in the S5 has definitely been updated from the original S4's so a few tweeks wouldn't surprise me, but it'd be good to know for sure.

PS from what I've read, there's no discernible benefit from using a higher grade than 95 RON on this lump, Audi advise 95. I'm no expert though!

The new steering and stop start are meant to have helped the overall consumption, I'm yet to do a long motorway run and have averaged 20 mpg since delivery a month ago. I'd thought about waiting for the RS4 but while I'm sure it'll be a fantastic car but not sure if I'd enjoy the fuel costs.

I'd be very interested to hear the results. I always used super in my Octavia until one day my local garage had sold out so I had to use normal - made absolutely no noticeable difference in performance or consumption and that engine is meant to be mapped for super unleaded.

20! Either you drive hard or spend a lot of time in busy towns? I get more than that around Bristol. Maybe I need to man up and drive harder. Il let you know my thoughts on the 99 RON.

The main reason for going 99 was the car kicked out black smoke after I started it up one morning.

Nick, how many miles are you getting out of a full tank?

My normal driving I'm probably looking at 300 and around 250 with a small amount of spirited driving. I tend to enjoy being in the car a lot so like to take my time on my commute.

That deserves some kind of medal! I average 19.7. Best on a long run was around 31.

What year and gearbox is yours?

My journey to work was less economical on the 99 RON compared to the 95 and there is definitely no power difference. Maybe it needs time but first thoughts are that it's the same or worse than the 95.

b8 s4 is mapped from factory to run on 95 and give you power and ecoconmy quoted numbers - the ecu does not run more timing on these to take advantage of better fuel when standard. When tuned that is different as you will take advantage of the fuel

It may just be me but the car doesn't feel as quick on the 99 either. Does this make sense or am I imagining things. The mes and I also noticed less of an exhaust note. Maybe it is co-incidence and maybe it's just us getting used to the car.

iv done over 18,000 miles in B8 S4's ... and 330 from a tank would be a normal average on average driving

but you can get less than 200 if you spank it

think max i ever got was 380 - 390

I'm obviously doing too much spanking! But it's a lot of fun!
