Excessive oil use

Hello all,

I have been reading some posts about excessive oil consumption that the TFSI engines have.

Has anyone here experinced this? My car hasn't done that many miles to monitor it yet.

Cheers.

My car is MRC stage 2, and with general driving (e.g. commuting plus some 'spirited' runs) it'll use around 1L between services. Over the course of a track day it will use around 0.5L.

Considering that the 3.0TFSi runs relatively hot (I see oil temperatures of 110-115C during normal driving and up to 125C on track) I wouldn't say that this usage was excessive, and if anything a regular top-up helps keep the oil a little fresher between services anyway.

Mines the same, just topped it up half a litre in 6k

You may have read into the 2.0 TFSI engine issues (eg S3 8P) which can be prone to using 1l per 1000 miles

I took my car for a oil service. It had a engine software update and breather valve changed as part of an Audi technical service bulletin.

When I asked what that was for the dealers said it was related to excessive oil usage by some owners.

Thanks for the replies. Come to think of it some of the posts did refer to a 2.0. From your experiences our 3.0 engines are not that bad.

There is a definite trend of higher oil consumption than expected with these 3.0TFSI engines, not as bad as the 2.0 TFSIs though as mentioned!

Seems largely cured by switching from the 5W30 grade VAG spec oils, so a decent 5W40, even better if its an ester synthetic one .

Which oil is that?

Anything Ester synthetic is good, Oilman will be best placed to advise but from what Tim told me; Millers CFS, Millers CFS NT, Fuchs Pro S, Motul Sport, Motul 300V, Gulf Competition etc.

I think the issue is the 5W30 is really a bit thin, and oil engines run quite hot at ~110-115C and the oil vaporises and it eats breathed out. A 5W40 is a little better with the heat, plus an ester synthetic has a lower vapour pressure meaning it won't vapourise so easily (and a load of other benefits).

That's my understanding anyway, I just switched to Millers CFS NT 5W40 as it also has the low friction nanodrive additive. It's not cheap, but then it's about £30 over what a regular fully synth would cost per oil change. I change every 5K so that's £60 a year extra for the best oils we can buy, that's the cost of a tank of fuel per year to put it in perspective.

Thanks for the info. Is the CFS 504/507 VAG approved?

No mate, it isn't VAG approved, I don't think any of those mentioned Ester synthetics are.
