As I'm about to pull the trigger on a nearly new s4 avant, what are your thoughts on the potential speed of depreciation once the new model arrives? Obviously a) the rate of depreciation will increase and b) nobody can predict exactly what wil happen. However, as the b8 s4 has built up a keen following I'm wondering / hoping that value retention will be slightly better than average.

Usually when a new model of this kind comes out it takes a while before they start arriving at the garages, then a bit longer for people to own them, so you're looking at a good few months after release date before you even see one.
They're also a completely different market, depending on how old your car is I suppose. People looking at paying £50k+ for a new car are not going to have much of an impact on people looking for a used £20-30k car.
You might also find that the new one sparks interest in the Audi range and the prices remain quite stable.
If your car is worth 50% of list price when 3 years old then you've done OK!

Owned one for 18 months now (2010 plate stronic avant). I've been watching the market quit closely for the last 2years. It's a fact that for the same or lesser option spec, the asking price for a used S4 has actually gone up!!
On paper I could put mine on the market and ask for slightly more than I paid for it. Wether or not I would get it is another debate
Personally, I put some of it down to the fact that you can easily get greater than 450ps with a wee trip to MRC. A very desirable car indeed once they fall out of the three year warranty period.
