What brake upgrade options are there available?

MRC mention RS5 and RS6 as options. Would these be the wavy discs? I'm ideally looking for a straight fit running on 19s.

P.S. My budget doesn't stretch to ceramics before anyone mentions those.

Which fluid would you recommend?

AP do some good high temp fluids and I use that in my Spider. This will improve things in extremes, as it helps prevent the fluid boiling and making the pedal mushy when you're really pushing on. Ferodo DS2500's are an excellent road/track compromise pad in my opinion, but they can be very sensitive to bedding-in procedures - get it wrong and they laydown an uneven thickness of deposits on the rotor face and can lead to what most interpret as warped discs. Follow the instructions carefully (available all over the web, so we shouldn't need another bedding-in thread here...) and they will be fine though.

The std brakes on the S4 are like tap washers, but I suppose that Audi had to differentiate between S and RS models somewhere. Big brake kits are very good, but do compare weights, as whilst a 380mm 8-pot setup might have massive braking power, they could be twice as heavy which has a huge impact on unsprung weights, which affect ride quality, steering accuracy etc etc. Just worth a check. If I get the chance I will weigh a standard S4 caliper and disc (they're in a box in the garage) and you can then ask for the combined wieght of any replacement to make sure you're not increasing things too much. Those 400mm ceramics on mine were about 50% of the weight of the standard C5 RS6 disc and caliper combo and made as big a difference to suspension and steering quality as they did to ultimate braking.

I take it brake fluid temps only really become a concern when braking hard for prolonged periods of time, like on a track day, otherwise the stock 5.1 fluid should be good to go for general spirited driving.

What about braided hoses?

It would be good to get an idea how much the standard brake setup weighs so I can compare and contrast with alternatives that I come across.

Also, can you check how many pots the standard calipers have please.

I would think once you get to changing the hoses you are looking at warranty issues

You'll have to try quite hard to boil 5.1, so it should be OK for most things outside of a lairy Trackday.

I have braided hoses on mine and I'd argue with any dealer about warranty if they pulled a face. It's just good sense as part of a brake upgrade. Std S4 brakes are very weak for a std car, never mind when the engine's had work too.

Std calipers are single pot sliding type - nasty nasty nasty. But cheap, and for most people most of the time, just fine. S4 man is assumed to be a conservative, considered and thinking braker I reckon - where as RS4 man......

rs5 will go straight on

rs6C6 setup has custom brackets. prices have proabbly changed as audi are upping brake caliper prices all the time

We have s6 ceramic discs and rs4 ceramic calipers on our S4 now
