Is an upgrade available to 7-digit postcode entry? (yes!)

Post by neil1003 » Fri Mar 28, 2014 10:19 pm

Is it possible to upgrade the 2010 HDD MMI 3G sat nav to take 7-digit postcodes? 5 digits just seems ridiculous on a system that cost so much (at the time), and my ancient TomTom does 7 digits!!!

£10k for an upgrade??!!

 :audibash:

Maybe not then! But interested in what is possible, even if it's so prohibitive that I wouldn't actually do it.

Got the car today and had a play with the sat nav - it's not too bad without the 7-digit entry really. I was being a little premature moaning about it, as you can obviously still then put in the road as well. Would just be a lot easier if it was 7-digit in the 1st place!

mmm, rubbish... went to Hampstead / Belsize Park today, and my nav wouldn't give me any more detail than "NW3". Usually it gives 4 digits (so I would select "NW3 x"), and then you narrow down by street etc, but obviously NW3 is a HUGE area, so thousands of streets came up!! Rubbish :audibash:

Think I will keep my 10-yr TomTom in the glove box, as it is way better than the Audi standard one.

Are you sure? To get more options when the first part is 3 chars involves tapping the space in, then more options come up.

I was caught out on this at first.

mmm, I'm doubting myself now, but I am fairly sure :?

But I've never had to tap the space in before. If I'm going to (made-up place) BT4 5TY, and I type in BT4, I get a list of options pop up as soon as I have put the 4 in - it'll list BT4 2, BT4 3, BT4 5, etc, and I will select BT4 5, and from there I can narrow down to street etc.

When I did NW3, it didn't do this, and I couldn't enter any more characters. Unless I was :drink: . And the missus was also :drink: .

I'll try it again in the morning, inputting the same postcode, and see if I was just being stupid

When you've put nw3 in try and see if there is an option for a space after. Audi dealer didn't know this either, that's not saying much though.

Well I never, it works! Thanks :beerchug:

But... I don't understand why. Every other postcode in the format AB1 2CD doesn't need me to add a space, but NW3 does. After I tried NW3 today (which needed the space) I then tried a load of other random postcodes in the same format, and not one of them needed a space.

Very confused.

But I'll now know what to do if it doesn't work straight away... add a space. Cheers :jump_clap:

It's becoz some London postcodes are 7 characters rather than the 6 we are mostly familiar with.
