How i ended up ordering a new S4

Post by Necroscope » Thu Dec 10, 2009 2:16 pm

Hello..............(echo)

...........hello...............(echo)

Hi guys,

From looking at the post list i am guessing this isnt the most widely used area of the forum, ow well maybe as the model gets older more poeple will join.

Anyway i ordered a new S4 about a month back with a confirmed build of week 2. I guess it will land mid Feb, and i will be holding back for the new reg on the 1st March :)

My previous car was an '07 2.7 Boxster and whilst i loved her to bits, running costs and the need for something more practical (and different) pushed me towards the S4.

I have to admit that the S5 was my initial taste but after driving the S4 and looking at how much more practical and economical it was it was a no brainer, as to which one i wanted.

I have ordred the following:

Sprint Blue
S4 Super Sports in black leather
RS4 alloys (an absolute must)
B&O
Heated Seats
Rear Parking Sensors
Blue tooth.

Not a monster spec, and no sat-nav. At 2K i am pretty sure i can find my way home and to work.

Currently driving a 1.25 Zetec S reg Fiesta (its killing me) and really looking forward to the S4.

Pictures when she lands. Speak soon,

Phil.

Hi Phil

Good decision

Looks like we'll be the only owners on this forum!

As a matter of interest, did you spec the ADS & Sports Diff? And have you gone S-tronic or manual?

I was also pondering the S5, but for the reasons you mentioned, plus the exclusivity of this model at present, I'm so glad I chose the S4 (still only seen one on the road and they came out in March). However, I must point out that, disappointingly, it is not much more frugal than the S5. After around 10k miles mine's on 23 mpg which is pretty much the combined figure quoted for the S5.

Nice to meet you Pete,

I only do around 10k a year and TBH it wasnt the fuel that worried me but the road tax, i didnt make that very clear in the OP, sorry.

How the hell did i forget to mention that i opted for ADS with damper control. My budget wouldnt stretch to the full ADS, and i only added damper control to make sure i could set the throttle responce down from thermo nuclear, to a setting where i could get a smooth change from first to second. If you hadnt guessed i went for a manual :)

Did you have your beast from new? I opted for a low spec new car over a used high spec car as i felt i didnt need the toys. I have to admit that i would have loved sat nav though, makes the dash look like the bridge of the enterprise.

Anything i should be looking for come March? How is your car treating you?

Looking forward to many more enjoyable posts. Take it easy,

Phil.

Good to meet you too Phil :beerchug:

Mine was an ex-demo with a couple thousand miles on; was going to order but couldn't face the wait - I pile on the miles quickly and my previous B6 S4 had to go before it got to 200,000!!! Yes mine's pretty spec'd up but then I spend half my life in the car so it needed to be nice!

The car is absolutely perfect for me - drives superbly, the S-tronic transmission is awesome for town driving (trips into the centre of London are now no longer a chore) and also for long commutes (which I do all the time), but for someone who would use the S4 more as a driver's car I'd say manual would be preferable - I've found it a bit tricky to always gauge correctly what gear you're in using the flappy paddles in Manual mode (which is the only way to cover ground as rapidly as possible).

You mentioned damper control, but you do know that's nothing to do with throttle response? It's a suspension option (and it's great). The ADS you've ordered has a throttle response option for S-tronic transmissions but I'm not sure if it applies in manual cars - may be worth checking.

The only thing I can think of you'll need to be looking out for come March is a big grin on your face

I tried DSG many years ago in a 2.0T A3, at that point i thought nar not for me. Next experience was in a MK2 TT, it still didnt fit IMO. PDK in a Boxster S on track was great, but again NO for a road car. However just before ordering i jumped in an S-Tronic S4. I have to admit that if i had the extra 1.5K for the gearbox it would have been something i would have considered. It fits the S4 best out of all the cars i have driven.

This ADS and throttle repsonce is something i have never managed to completely bottom. My first test drive was in a manual fully loaded S4 with all the toys. I was told by the dealer (worcester) that the throttle repsonce did change when shifting between settings. However Stratford didnt know and put me in touch with an Audi test pilot -sorry driver- who said it didnt. At this point i am totally confussed, so after some internet research i find something that at least says it does change. However is this only connected with S-Tronic? I have no idea. The new video on the Audi website would probably suggest yes, doh.

Either way its on the car now, and i would guess i have gone confimedas well. Times going to tell i guess :)
