Autobox fluid & filter change

It seems modern autoboxes are filled for life, i.e. aren't topped up via a dipstick like they were when pussy was a kitten, and the fluid is something more modern than the old red vegetable based autofluid that I was used to. I had an early new shape Range Rover LR322 in 2002, with the BMW 3.0 TD6 engine that ate it's first 'sealed for life box' box after 18 months and 70K miles. Moving on, it's a common thing on olderRangies and BeeEmms' now. This confirmed by speaking with MRC Doug a couple of weeks ago, who recommends a box filter and fluid change on the C6 every 20-30K miles. Even though this isn't on the service schedule.

Whilst I was at TPS haggling over ceramics (see other thread), I picked up the bits to give my 'box some lovin.

New filter (0B6325429), £34.59, sump gasket (09E321371A), £26.43, and ATF fluid (G055005A2), £13.75/ltr. Those are discounted prices, excl VAT. A box fill is 10.8 litres (£151.29 fluid total cost!). I bought eleven litres, even though I don't think it'll all come out when I drain it, I think a couple of litres will remain in the torque converter.

I'll do this in the week, and post up some pics, if I can get my broadband sorted....

Nice thread... would you recommend using any other manufacturer’s ATF?

You'll only get about 6 litres out. You could do it twice and get most of it out.

ATF absolutely has to be to the right specification, so I personally never ever would.

I had been quoted using Mannol, Febi, Meyle etc... all come at very competitive price vs genuine Vw/Audi that is tad dearer but you know where you stand tbh.

Question i have is that atf is atf irrespective who makes it so long as it comes from decent supplier, right?

no surprise, Q'tum is an emerging player, very aggressive and competitive which does indeed means more business for them and high/er margins for TPS/VW etc... win/win for both (incl. the end user who will be in position to source "genuine" parts at more cost effective price).

Why change the sump gasket? I'm about to do the same job on my RS4. No mention of removing the sump. just trying to work out if I need to

The RS6's torque converter based 6-speed automatic gearbox that the OP was servicing (rather than the RS4 B8's DL501 7-speed DSG that you have) has a large filter which lives inside the gearbox itself so the sump has to be removed to change the filter. It looks a bit like this -

Yours uses a completely different gearbox oil filter, more like a traditional engine oil filter and also accessed from the engine bay. The equivalent to the RS6's gearbox filter would be if you wanted to replace the gearbox "strainer" on your 7-Speed DSG which would then need a sump gasket like this -

Thanks for this reply. I’ve been check out RS4/5/6 forums now because there not many people active in the RS4 B8 section these days.

So my situation. I really don’t know what gearbox work has been done on this car, so really want to give it a full reset. ITS DINE 60k

I’m thinking:

MTF - definitely
ATF - definately
ATF filter - may as well? Seems like an easy enough fit
Strainer - should I replace it?

I’ve spoke to a few specialists who all said “we do sump off, inspection, new gasket”. I thinking there must be a reason.

I'd agree with them, do everything. Just for reference, the Strainer is only about £60 so you might as well do that as well, then "everything" is done giving you peace of mind over your GB.

Cheers Ian. The Pennie finally dropped last night after seeing your pic of the kit. I was missing a section on ELSA.

P.S. I don’t know what ATF you guys are using over there, but Arnold Clark motor spares are currently selling 20l liqui moly 8100 for £200. 👀
