what happens if you have the key in your pocket, and you get car jacked and these drive off in the car

does the engine still run ? or will it run until its next turned off ?

I remember one of the A8 guys telling me it will switch off once the key is out of a certain vicinity. So they will get a few hundred yards down the road and it will switch off. Don't quote me though.

Only one way to find out......

I've always assumed that it will run until it is stopped.

What about loss of power steering/brakes etc

Can't see that being the case, imagine if genuine mistake and the owner pulled out of a junction and car suddenly died half way across road.

Most cars will remain running until turned off by the driver. It's too dangerous for it to suddenly stop if it no longer detects the key in the car.

Good job too, as doubt the Police have anything quick enough to catch it.

Always bugs me this does - the steering wheel still "works" and the brakes should still have enough stored vacuum for 2-3 good stops.

However I don't see why you couldn't have it stop if below say 5mph. If the cars have an electronic handbrake no issues with rolling away.

I've walked away from the car a couple of times with the keys in my pocket, a bleep sounds and a symbol of a key appears on the dash to indicate that the key has gone out of range. Actually the range is very limited as it sometimes happens when I'm putting my daughter in her seat belt. So car keeps running as said above.

What I would like is the ability to lock the car whilst the engine is running so on those cold winter mornings I can go back indoors whilst it warms the engine and seats. Even better if I could remote start from indoors without having to go outside :biggrin3:

The Astra would carry on running without the fob, but you could not switch it off and obviously couldn't restart it. A real pita if the fob plays up also :E
