MMI Version

Post by anth8910 » Thu Mar 01, 2012 4:32 pm

Hi All,
New to the forum and soon to be pround owner of a RS6 Avant in sepang blue  I have a question about the interface on the car. It has HHD navigation and in the specs it mentions AMI but not MMI or what version it has, any ideas? I am picking it up next week and want to see if I need any cables etc for my ipod. Thanks in advance!

AMI is separate from MMI. The later is the Audi music interface which I think was standard on all RS6s whichever MMI (2G or 3G) was fitted. The socket is in the glove box, you'll need a cable for iPod connectivity.

The multimedia interface (MMI) is essentially the centre console and screen covering nav, radio etc. If it's a pre 2009 (build not registration) car it will be MMI 2G. 3G was incorporated into the 2009 cars (and maybe some late 2008 cars). Easy way to tell the difference is checking the main control knob, if it has a small joystick (for a finger) on top then it is 3G.

not massive

3G is quicker as HDD vs. DVD

you also get 3d mapping of buildings / landmarks ... bit of a gimmick tbh

2G has a 6.5 Inch TFT Colour Screen 1/4 VGA - 580 * 240 resolution - 3G has a 7 Inch TFT Colour Screen VGA - 800 * 480 resolution
3G has dynamic Radio lists (it lists the radio stations its "seen" lately)
2G plays MP3 from CD only - 3G plays MP3's from CD, SDCard. Also plays DVDs on the screen (when staionary unless you hack it with VagCom)
Both have Connectivity for MP3 players via USB, iPod interface and Aux Audi (check you have both the USB and iPod Cables in the car)
2G has a max of 160 Directory entries in the telephone list - 3G has 2000. 3G does not need voice training to call (its pretty good at guessing the "name v spoken name" - 2G needed training with voice tags for the telephone directory
2G has 2D and Birds eye mapping for Sat nav. destination entered by spelling the word - 3G has 2D, birdseye, 3D terrain modelling and faster graphics, Destination can be entered by voice commands

As others said easy visual check is the joystick in the centre knob, other ones is the use of the words "Media" on the 3G and "CD/Aux" on the 2G (beside the Radio button)
