Have joined the C6 club as well - a couple of questions

Hi Chaps,

I have joined the C6 club. Now have an Avus silver 2004 C5RS6 saloon- 530bhp and 12.5 sec 1/4 mile and phantom black 2009 C6 RS 6 saloon-572 bhp and ? sec 1/4 mile, parked next to each other in the garage.

My first driving impressions are that C6 is not as agile as the C5, is a lot quiter than the C5, even when driven in a "spirited manner" but has huge power surge plus potential with straight ecu remap to go to 700bhp+. A much tighter and 'newer ' vehicle than the C5 as one would expect.

The variable damping ride control is a hit with the better half after the pss9's of the C5 even when set at 4 on front and 5 on rear.

A couple of questions for fellow C6 owners from my initial driving experience with the C6 compared to the C5.

1.on rapid acceleration, the C6 seems to 'lurch' momentarily with upward gearchanges, pretty much like a harsh manual gearbox- clutch gear change.
Is this a 'normal' characteristic for the C6? The C5 has a seamless continual acceration all the way through the gears.

I have no problem with the blipping of the throttle on down changes. Is this 'pseudo double declutching' necessary with the C6 orjust a 'cosmetic' effect?

2. did the C6 ever come with a solar sunroof to power internal fans when parked in the sun , similar to the C5 warm weather package?

3. how do you stop the black streaks on the road under accelaration! This beast will eat tyres, from what i can see so far.

In closing the C6 is a very powerful machine which standard could get one into a little trouble with injudicous use of the right foot.
I cannot even imagine what 700 bhp remap feels like    , but will go down that route, once 'comfortable' with current standard C6 power.

Any fellow owners comments appreciated, as C6 owners are a very small group in australia.

Hi John,

Glad u like your new car....in answer to your questions in brief:

1. the gearbox shouldnt be "lurchy" as such it should have smooth upchanges with a "boom" or "fart" (if you want to call it that) on the upshift. Not sure if thats what youre reffering to ?? should be smooth gearchange. Perhaps something to get looked at if it is of concern as gearboxes are expensive out of warranty.

2. Yes it can be specced with a solar sunroof, i specced one on mine, dont know why its of no use here in uk...lol.

3. I would make a comment but not sure if it might offend...so i'll pass on that. haha.

best,
Adam.

Hi Adam,

thank you for your response much appreciated.

A new 'challenge' arose on second morning of ownership.

Started the beast from cold- did not start instataneouslu and wheb started, started rough like running on 6 cylinders for about 5 seconds with noticeable white smoke from under bonnet and also out exhausts.

when engine warmed up, all ok. Dealer service manager thought that all these high performance Audis were a little temperamental when cold. I responded 'hey sunshine, this car has 10,000 miles on it. My C5 RS6 which i still have, never started like this once in its 50,000 mile life of spirited driving. So run a full Vagcom and look for oil leaks as well"

I definitely dont think this is 'normal' C6 start up behaviour.

As i am second owner, i can only assume/hope that first owner ran the car in as per owners manual instruction- dont hammer it for first 2,500 miles.

Any other owners had this experience?

comments appreciated. Fortunately vehicle has full 2 year Audi warranty on it.

if its any consolation ... my '61 plate TTRS with 3k on it really struggles to turnover when cold

On cold start the C6 runs hard for about 30secs to get heat into the Cats, lots of smoke/steam on a cold morning and noticeably increased noise.

There are reports of batteries being replaced, I only ever had non start issue once, charged Batt and all was good, didn't even show a fault?!

Wouldn't say the car ran "rough" in any way though, just std cold start with increased revs and exhaust note!

It should be smooth from cold start, albeit a bit more noisy.
There should be no smoke from under the bonnet, but lots from the exhaust.
Get it booked in. Audi UK are sh!t hot on the RS6's so you'll have it resolved in no time under warranty.

Hey John,

Smoke from under the bonnet on start up seems very suss to me, the only time ive ever seen smoke from under the bonnet was once when i topped the oil up and over spilt some in the engine bay and it burnt off in a traffic jam briefly for a few seconds.

With regards to the misfire i will admit that the c6 does cough and splutter a tad when starting from cold but fires up instantly after the awkward splutter into life after the key turn, there should be no noisy concerns as the car immediatly reverts to choke mode (approx 1000k indicated revs for about 30 secs).....it should bellow smoke from the back and as Nudenut said it is programmed to warm the cats for about 30 seconds to prevent damage to them....but nothing more spectacular than that...my advice get it checked and dont let them fob you off if you suspect something, if your hearing anything other than a smooth engine note then there's something not right.

best.
Adam.

Many thanks for the prompt response and very useful advice from fellow forum members.
I was not aware that the C6 V10tt cold started like this. It took me by surprise based on my C5 RS6 experience.
The C6 cold start 'performance' can be likened to a dragon awaking and clearing its throat before getting down to business and scaring the bejesus out of driver and fellow road users, using the beast analogy.
I will still have full Vagcom check by the dealer to set a base for future comparisons.

regards,
john

I had dealer do Vagcom check and "look at the cold start misfiring". I dont know what was done, but it seems that cold start is a lot smoother than before.

On moderate to hard accelaration, still getting noticeable 'lurch' with boom when auto changes at redline from first to second in drive and sport mode. Still feels like the decrease in momentum and then acceleration you get with a manual gearbox when you miss the change at redline from first to second and then hurriedly get it into second gear and then keep accelerating. Although with the C6, the revs dont increase during the 'gear change up". It feels more like they drop right off on the change before starting up again in second gear. Much sound and fury happening on the chage from first to second, so cant be more specific. On the VCDS dealer check, no fault codes shown for the auto.

Is this noticeable drop in momentum between first and second gear under moderate to hard acceleration programmed into the tcu to "save the auto" from the massive torque of the v10 tt rather than have the engine do a flat shift while changing gears like in the C5?

I will try shifting with paddles from first to second to see if that removes/reduces the 'lurch'.

A little hard to compare my auto performance with any C6 RS6 as only one other in Perth.
Apologies for what may be obvious questions.

Any advice appreciated.
john
ps the beast is indeed a thirsty one, but hey, "how fast do you want to go? How much money do you have?"

Have you checked the gearbox fluid level? I'm not an RS6 owner yet, but have had the symptoms you describe on other cars I've owned. All were very susceptible to having the level spot on (neither over, nor under filled).

As others have said .. gear change should be smooth ..

Still sounds like you have a problem to find

Thank you fellow posters for your advice on what to expect for the gearbox changes for a standard C6 RS6.

This is much appreciated.

I now suspect that after running the beast at the local drag strip wednesday night 28 December,2011 when ambient temperature at 8pm-9pm was 89Deg F with track temperature 104Deg F and recording 1/4 mile time of 11.97 seconds, terminal speed 121 mph, 0-60ft in 2.016 secs, that as per nudenut comment that the beast has been chipped, even at low mileage of 8,600 miles.
A mapped ECU with increased power/torque would explain why the gearbox changes may not be as smooth as a standard C6 RS6. I am trying to find out what Australian introduced map the beast may have - most likely APR or possibly MTM, as they are the main Audi mappers in Oz by contacting the respective suppliers.

The beast was bought from Audi Australia, Perth on 'as is ' basis with full 2 year Audi warranty

IMO that would explain it. A mapped car doesnt start up as smoothly as stock from cold. I noticed this when i had mine mapped.

Hi

That is a very good time! Anyway, do you know the best 0 - 60 mile, quarter mile time, and terminal speed that people have done in the C6 RS6? I've looked at a few vids but it is not the same as seeing the actual figures. I'm off to Heathcote (a drag strip in Victoria Australia) in Feb. Some numbers to beat would be great.

Best wishes with dealing with your issues. I'm in Australia and would add to the comment about the lack of RS6 owners here is the lack of RS6 owners who give them a real go to see what they can do, although this is probably a global issue.

best regards

sallyh
