And it's goodbye from him

Post by gmk666 » Thu Mar 03, 2011 3:42 pm

A mere 14 months after I bought it, the 6 is going.
It's a real shame, but I didn't feel I was exploiting the car's amazing potential often enough to justify keeping it.
Most of my miles are covered crawling in and out of London, and to keep doing it in the RS6 seemed almost sacrilegious. (It was also costing me a small fortune for the privilege, but then I'd expected that.)
Another reason for its departure is that I was feeling guilty about being so uptight when the family was onboard (we've a three year old who was always told to remove her shoes before entering Daddy's car) and with another baby due next month, family trips aren't about to get any less messy.
So what's its replacement?
Well no R8 or return to 911s for me (just yet).
I've fallen into the family wagon mire big time, and pick up a Merc E350CDI estate tomorrow. While it may be big, comfy and fairly fuel-efficient I know it's not going to make me smile anywhere near as much as the RS6 did, but hey ho.
It'll be interesting to see how long this self-imposed exodus from performance motoring lasts. I'm already looking at prices of used Renaultsport Clios...
In the meantime, take care everyone and enjoy your cars. As I said, they are quite ridiculously awesome machines and I'm not sure we'll be seeing that many of their ilk again. :(

Thought I'd just add one last (crappy iPhone) photo.
Definitely had the 'what the hell am I doing?' feeling as I took it, ironically in the same Sainsbury car park I first talked to the dealer about the car.
Someone's going to get a bloody good car.

Gav,
Blimey you've been hit with a sensible stick.
I don't think it will be long before you get over it.
There ought to be an Audi sponsored group therapy initiative for lapsed RS6 owners. :nodder:

Hit with the sensible stick?

A more accurate description would be battered unconscious and then dry rogered with the sensible stick.

The Merc is a very 'nice' car.

It's very comfortable. It's exceptionally well-built. It has lots of fun gadgets. It's huge inside. It's nippy enough (620Nm of torque) and of course, it's not as fatally attracted to BP forecourts.

It promotes a totally different driving style to the 6. A lot more wafty and a lot less aggressive. Put simply, it's not a performance car. You're right James, it's a sensible car. And I've no idea how long I'll be able to maintain sensibleness. Last time I even vaguely tried (a Golf GTI) I lasted 8 months...

Blimey the site has been re-skinned....very sensible.

I'd give it 18 months by which time the RS6 C7 will be launched and powered by a V2* quad turbo lump. It will deliver 550bhp and do 70mpg.
Perfect timing because by this stage, you will have reached a record breaking level of boredom with your Murk despite all its glorious Newtons.

* I mean two cylinders, not the rocket, although, I wouldn't put it past Audi R&D to head hunt a couple of WW2 Nazi rocket scientists to put their heads together and give the mother four wheels.

You're not far off the truth. (Not sure about the doodlebugs though.)
There's an article in this month's evo and they reckon the new RS6 is due in 2013 with the 555bhp twin-turbo V8 from the new Bentley.
W.O. must be spinning in his grave.
Anyway, can't waste time on here. Too busy looking for a remap. (There's a Brabus one that doesn't invalidate the MB warranty...)

Think I tried to buy your car - Mayfair Audi?

Anyway, saw it on the used car locator one night, rang the next day, all salesmen were busy but my details were taken and a salesman 'would ring me back'. Still waiting....

Car then disappeared off the locator so someone obviously beat me to it. You would think that a salesman would ring back though as sourcing another RS6 Avant can't be that hard with these fuel prices?

Not sure to be honest.
I only agreed the deal on Wednesday and changed over on Friday.
Car was traded with Croydon Mercedes so it be worth giving them a ring if you're still looking.

Ta. It was your car - the reg number matches. They were asking £52,450 FWIW. Obviously did not hang around!

That's London prices for you.
I only paid a couple of grand more than that when I bought it last year from Norwich.

Prices of all heavy metal stuff like RS6s have firmed over the last six months - dealers don't want to discount. It remains to be seen if fuel price rises begin to reverse this.
