RS6 - The Pros and Cons?

Hey folks,

Just wondering, what are the pros and cons of long term RS6 Avant ownership?

Typical faults, maintenance costs, and so on?

Pro: 800bhp
Con: No Autobahns in the UK

Pro: You'll find a 5.0 litre V10 for less than £50k
Con: You'll not find a litre of 98RON for less than £1.35

However, for the time being at least, one by far outweighs the other.

Fuel prices could be an issue, but I already pay a lot for my WRX so.......

I guess it might not be much different!

I own a c5 rs6 and i love her ..........................There is nothing i would rather have :wink:

Pros

* Not recognised by most people on the road for what it is, to most its a Family Estate Car .. so rarely get "picked on" .. (and if you do, car delivers)
* Huge Smiles per Miles ratio when driving
* Carries half a house in the back while still doing 0-60 in sub 5 seconds
* Looks fantastic
* Huge moding potential
* Reliable - based on its been out 2 years and I'm not seeing a thread of failures .. Worst we had was headlight condensation causing headlight failures, which was fixed under recall

Cons
* Not recognised by most people on the road for what it is, so no muppet pulls over for you on the M-ways
* Its a heavy car .. Audi do a fantastic job of breaking the laws of physics, but you cant get away from the weight nagging at the back of your mind in twisty roads .. having said that car still out performs my driving capabilities (based on comparison to chuckability of my Boxster S, which is probably a really unfair comparison)

Having only had mine 6 months, I can only agree with G's post 100%.

Re the WRX consumption comparison, I don't know the specifics of its consumption, but on the RS6 on a fill ( here in Italy ) that costs approx €115 I get , if I behave approx 550-600kms from a tank ( i think about 21mpg ). Once you get your toe down and start playing with the paddles and let that V10 sing you can start thinking about sub 10 mpg. When I was in the alps this Christmas, on the ascents I could see the range meter dropping 10kms every few mins. Its thirsty!
As many have said before you buy this car knowing this fact, and the fun, safety and practicality all outweigh that point.
By the way its awesome in the snow too.

Pros:
* Classy ( bar the subaru blue version)
* Comfortable with quality interior

Cons:
* Fuel.....averaging 16mpg
* Power v License / points. It's there but simply impossible to use without eyes constantly flicking to rear vew mirror
* Inert, bland steering
* Sat Nav. Awful
* Extremely heavy....and you feel it.
* Ipod (MMI) prehistoric and buggy
* Tyre wear - 7000 tops

It's a good car. Not £81,000 worth by any stretch, but a good car. I've friends with C6's, and they all, without question wanted out after 12 months. Fast Estates are great....for a little while....then you miss the handling.
You simply do not and cannot use the power, and there is little or no satisfaction as regards the handling. Combine this with the fuel, increased depreciation, insurance and tyres and it simply doesn't equate.

Had a C5 ad C6....not again.

I've been through the Handling dilemma and come out the other side after appreciating the the summer tourer around Europe and the Alpine winter handling, plus family practicalities. I guess for me its a family mans super car. I keep thinking Porcshe, Lotus, Jag XKR and all thats happens is I just think there's no space for kids, clubs, Dog etc etc. maybe I have to re live that dream once the kids have flown the nest, Until then it still ticks too many boxes for me.

Re the "toys" I have asked MRC for some thoughts on a Remap: Engine and Gears purely to improve the MPG of course :P oh and a Miltek to get some extra roar from that lovely V10!
