It might be worth you trawling through old copies of evo.
Harry Metcalfe had a bee in his bonnet about this very subject.
He had an RS6, but had to use one of his other 716 cars for towing duties.

From the Brochure page 31 re weights, towing weights etc .. the towing weight figures are all "NA" and there is a footnotegrizz wrote: They said the c6 rs6 is not homologated to have a tow bar or a s6 ..
"4 Vehicle not suitable for towing equipment."
here is that evo article

.
A tow bar would be a good idea so I can tow a spare fuel tank on a trailer.

Spot on with the cooling issue. Just had detachable one fitted to my X5.
Now you would think 4x4 3.5ltr diesel would be fit for towing racecar trailer/boat not exactly heavy items..... oh but no. Fitted price for detachable BMW tow bar... sit down..£1700!!!!!!!
Why so much? Well towbar and electrics 400 quid, not too bad? £1300 for additional fan and cooler for gear box! wtf? Hmm never had that with a range rover.
So based on that i can only presume that is why audi have said no to a towbar on the six.
