My Milltek Update

Post by Nudenut » Tue Dec 08, 2009 12:42 pm

Ok, finally got the Milltek fitted last Tuesday.

Initial thoughts are:

Love the look (black ovals) :) , however I'm still not convinced on the sound...

When cold it's not much louder than stock but a deeper sound - I like!! :)

As she warms up and on the move it is quite "boomy" between 1800 & 2600rpm under "soft" acceleration. Sadly this is quite intrusive when cruising about 70ish mph and I've had to disable the stereo's ability to compensate for in-cabin "noise" as the stereo was very noticeably/uncomfortably going up and down with small movements in my right foot!! :(

I spoke to AmD who fitted it and they have recently removed one from an S6 (C6) and I was at MRC on Friday (for Map & filters) whom said they had last week removed one from an RS6 (C6) - both owners unhappy! Apparently Milltek are looking into this, I will mail them shortly!

At tickover when warm she grumbles away a la Lambo - I like !! :)

At full chat she howls like a V10 should and I can only assume from outside the car she sounds awesome - I like!! :)

Bottom line is I was unhappy with the stock system for being too quiet but the jury is still out to some extent on the Milltek... will update!

My Millys are being fitted tomorrow. I'm not totally surprised at your response Nudenut re disappointment. Before I bought them Jeremy sent me a note to say that he found them intrusive at cruising speed.

I'm still looking forward to hearing the difference with healthy reservations.

Do you think Miltek can do anything about this booming, I am wondering if they can produce mods to existing pipes?

The Milltek standard S6 and RS6 systems are non-res.
Hence you will get boom.
If you get resonated sections fitted, the boom will be eliminated at 2k revs leaving you with just the glorious v10 note !

Which version did you get fitted? Res or Non res?

My understanding is C6 = all resonated!!??

James, all I can say is that against the quiet OE it's what we were after, it transforms a run of the mill "sounding" car into a car that sounds the beast it performs as!!

See how you go, I have mailed Milltek to enquire, we'll take it from there!!

Hi Nudenut,

Just got back having had them fitted. Simon at Morden MOT fitted them, he was recommended by Grizz and what a great bloke - he did an epic job.

Intiial thoughts much the same as yours. Having said that I haven't experienced the cruising boom because I live in central London and haven't motorwayed it yet.

Love the tickover, a real baritone presence and overall not a pikey look-at -me sound. Very V10.

Went to the local car wash and they all noticed the difference without me telling them that they were Millys.

I would be interested to see how you get on with Miltek and to hear what they have to say.

Cheers, James

Hi James,

I mailed Milltek yesterday, nout back as yet, will give it a couple of days.

Doug at MRC wrote on my post on SRS "Milltek are doing an updated exhaust that we should have to test on a couple of cars in a few weeks. Milltek told me today they have sold 200+ of these units. Time for someone to test a decatted C6?"

We will see!

Sorry to say this people but the 1800rpm booming is just part of having a Milltek or performance exhaust 2.5"+ in pipe diameter as that rpm is the resonance frequency point.

S4's and RS4's suffer from the same thing, the only difference I would say between non res and res is that the former will probably accentuate it. On my B7 I only have a 2.5" x-pipe and when in sport mode the resonance drone around 1800rpm is noticable but if I switch sport mode off and close the valves in the exhaust tail pipes it eliminates it.

When I had my S4 the only way to get around it is either to select a lower gear and cruise around at 2000+ rpm or if you are cruising in a higher gear at 1500-2000rpm just don't depress the throttle too much.

Milltek systems are decent however I would say they do not have a race bred reputation, they capitalised a niche sector of the market and have gained their reputation their. Quality of s/s used in manufacture, production problems etc have plagued them of late which is a shame and they are pricey considering what else you can get with a bit of searching around for an exhaust fabricator.

Interesting stuff, thanks P_G.

I have to say Ive just had another blat this morning and I am pretty happy. I want the sound to be intrusive at a lower frequency which means it has a presence but not a screaming fanfare that will turn heads before I arrive.

That is not to say that I am not interested to hear if there are any further developments from Miltek.

You're famous James!? :D

Blimey Nudenut , lucky the wife doesn't (to my knowledge) read this forum. I told her I was popping out to have a slow puncture repaired. I'm out with her in Snowy on Saturday, it will be interesting to see if she notices the new rumble. :bigblink:

LOL like ya style, must admit my Mrs just can't get her head round taking a perfectly good car and messing about with it... she thinks I just had Filters changed when I went to MRC last week!!

If ya Mrs does notice the sound it'll obviously just be where the exhaust has "bedded in a bit"
If she notices the changed tips you'll just have to own up to changing just the tips and commend her on her observation!!

I don't even try to explain about the motor stuff, plus the fact that I recently refused to buy her a new turbo steam iron for Christmas ergo she would view my indulgence as unfair. :boohoo:

Actually upon reflection, I take that back because I'm being a sexist bigot, I'll buy her the iron. :smile_smoking:
